Saturday News and Notes from the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals
When the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series arrived at Bristol Dragway this week, competitors knew they were stepping into the unknown. A legendary facility. A brand-new racing surface. And the potential for one of the fastest weekends in Thunder Valley history.
After two rounds of qualifying on Friday, that promise is beginning to reveal itself.
Teams spent much of the opening day learning the nuances of the freshly paved Bristol surface, which delivered smooth conditions and improving traction throughout the day. While only a handful of runs eclipsed the 300-mph mark, crew chiefs throughout the nitro categories agreed that the track has considerably more performance left to offer as rubber continues to build and teams become more aggressive with their tune-ups.
Friday's provisional leaders reflected a mix of veteran experience and championship pedigree. Leah Pruett paced Top Fuel with a 3.755-second run, while Matt Hagan led Funny Car at 3.956. Greg Anderson continued his remarkable Bristol success by taking the Pro Stock lead, and Gaige Herrera topped Pro Stock Motorcycle as he seeks his first No. 1 qualifier of the season.
Saturday's schedule promises even more. Final qualifying sessions remain on tap, along with the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, where semifinalists from last weekend's event in Epping will battle for bonus money, championship points, and momentum heading into Sunday's eliminations.
Nestled among the Tennessee mountains and surrounded by packed grandstands, Thunder Valley has long been one of drag racing's most iconic destinations. This weekend, with a fresh racing surface and ideal summer conditions, the historic venue appears poised to add another memorable chapter to its storied history.

Top Fuel Q3 Notes: Salinas Shines, Hart Improves, and Pruett Doubles Up with #2Fast2Tasty Victory
Saturday's first Top Fuel qualifying session at the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals proved that Bristol Dragway's new racing surface still had plenty left to give. While Friday night's hero runs established the benchmark, Q3 featured several teams making significant gains while others battled traction and tune-up challenges as conditions changed.
The biggest surprise of the session came from Jasmine Salinas, who delivered the quickest run of her weekend. Salinas powered to a 3.822-second pass at 326.00 mph and vault herself into contention near the top half of the field. The run was both the quickest elapsed time and one of the fastest speeds of the session.
Josh Hart continued his strong Bristol weekend with another impressive run. Hart posted a 3.887-second effort at 322.96 mph aHart's consistency throughout qualifying has positioned the Speedmasters team as a legitimate threat heading into eliminations.
Doug Kalitta rebounded nicely from Friday night's struggles. The Q1 leader returned to form with a 3.872-second run at 313.29 mph. Kalitta's run reinforced the strength of the Kalitta Motorsports program as the team searches for the optimal setup on Bristol's fresh surface.
Justin Ashley also made a solid move with a 3.929-second pass at 319.37 mph. While not enough to challenge for the top spot, the run gave Ashley another quality data point and kept the team firmly in the mix.
Maddi Gordon used a stellar .024 reaction time and a 3.922-second pass at 313.29 mph to best Shawn Reed, whose run ended early after encountering problems downtrack.
The session proved more challenging for several Friday frontrunners. Tony Stewart slowed to a 4.514-second pass after losing momentum downtrack, while Tony Schumacher encountered trouble and coasted to a 6.720-second effort. Billy Torrence also battled issues and slowed to a 4.515-second run after posting Friday's fastest speed.
Antron Brown managed a clean 4.047-second pass to defeat Schumacher, while Clay Millican bounced back from Friday's difficulties with a strong 3.852-second run at 308.57 mph.
Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge
One of the biggest storylines of the session came in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, where Leah Pruett continued her outstanding Bristol weekend.
Fresh off her victory in the delayed NHRA New England Nationals final on Friday evening, Pruett defeated Billy Torrence in the Top Fuel Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, semifinal matchup. Pruett posted a 4.017-second run while Torrence slowed to a 4.515, securing her place in the Challenge final later in the day and adding another victory to an already impressive weekend.
The win means Pruett has now collected both a New England Nationals Wally and a Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge round win during her Bristol stay.
Doug Kalitta rebounded nicely from Friday night's struggles. The Q1 leader returned to form with a 3.872-second run at 313.29 mph to defeat teammate Shawn Langdon in the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. Kalitta's run reinforced the strength of the Kalitta Motorsports program as the team searches for the optimal setup on Bristol's fresh surface.

With final qualifying still ahead, teams continue to refine their setups, while drivers such as Salinas, Hart, Kalitta, and Pruett have positioned themselves to carry significant momentum into eliminations.
Funny Car Q3 Notes: Prock Stays on Top as #2Fast2Tasty Challenge Produces Familiar Faces
The third Funny Car qualifying session at the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals was less about headline-grabbing performances and more about survival, consistency, and positioning as teams navigated changing daytime conditions at Bristol Dragway.
After Friday night's cool-air hero runs, Saturday's warmer conditions made it difficult to improve on the top qualifying efforts, but several teams still managed strong runs while the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge semifinal matchups added extra intensity to the session.
Austin Prock continued to look like the class of the field, posting a solid 4.357-second run next to Matt Hagan. While the elapsed time wasn't enough to challenge Friday's provisional No. 1 effort, it reinforced Prock's consistency and kept the Tasca Ford firmly in control heading into the final qualifying session.
Alexis DeJoria delivered one of the strongest runs of the round, posting a 4.010-second pass at 326.00 mph next to Cruz Pedregon. The run was among the quickest and fastest of the session and demonstrated she remains a serious contender heading into eliminations.
Dave Richards also turned in a standout performance with a 4.010-second pass that was later disqualified after the timing system generated an erroneous trap speed of 485 mph against Daniel Wilkerson.
Chad Green continued his strong Bristol performance with a 4.136-second run at 309.49 mph to best Spencer Hyde. Green's consistency throughout qualifying has kept him near the top half of the ladder and positioned the Bond-Coat team well for Sunday.
Jack Beckman added another strong run to what has already been a productive Bristol weekend. Fresh off claiming the delayed NHRA New England Nationals Funny Car title on Friday evening, Beckman drove to a 4.244-second pass against Ron Capps. While neither team matched Friday night's numbers, Beckman continued to build momentum entering race day.
Jordan Vandergriff also picked up a victory, posting a 4.548-second run while J.R. Todd encountered trouble and slowed dramatically to a 9.363-second pass. Vandergriff's win continued a weekend that has already included a runner-up finish in the completed New England Nationals final.
Jeff Arend made a clean solo run, recording a 4.429-second pass at 212.86 mph to collect valuable data as teams prepared for the final qualifying session.
Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge
The Funny Car semifinal matchups in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge featured a pair of veteran-versus-veteran battles with plenty of championship pedigree.

In the other semifinal, Jack Beckman defeated Ron Capps with a 4.244-second run. Beckman's victory, coupled with his New England Nationals triumph the previous day, continued an impressive stretch for the John Force Racing driver.
The results set up an all-John Force Racing final in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, with Vandergriff and Beckman scheduled to square off later Saturday.
Q3 Highlights

- Fastest Speed: Alexis DeJoria, 326.00 mph

- #2Fast2Tasty Final Set: Jordan Vandergriff vs. Jack Beckman

Saturday Outlook
While the daytime conditions prevented the dramatic improvements seen Friday night, Q3 further clarified the Funny Car hierarchy. Prock remains the benchmark, DeJoria and Green continue to show race-winning potential, and the all-John Force Racing showdown between Beckman and Vandergriff has become one of the weekend's most compelling storylines. With one final qualifying session remaining, teams will have one last opportunity to improve before eliminations begin in Thunder Valley.
Pro Stock Q3 Notes: Hartford Leads the Charge as 2Fast2Tasty Challenge Delivers a Pair of Photo Finishes
If there was any doubt that Pro Stock remains NHRA's most competitive category, Saturday's third qualifying session at the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals erased it.
The top seven pairings were decided by hundredths—and in some cases thousandths—of a second as drivers battled not only for qualifying position but also for spots in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge final.
Leading the way was Matt Hartford, who posted the quickest run of the session with a 6.658-second pass at 206.95 mph. Hartford's Total Seal Camaro edged Greg Stanfield by a razor-thin .004-second margin in one of the closest races of the round. The speed was also the fastest of the session, showing Hartford's combination continues to thrive on Bristol's new racing surface.
The other marquee matchup featured the two dominant forces of the KB Titan Racing camp. Dallas Glenn used a stellar .013 reaction time and a 6.671-second run at 206.32 mph to defeat Greg Anderson. Although Anderson ran a slightly quicker 6.659-second pass at 206.61 mph, Glenn's starting-line advantage delivered the victory by just .006-second.
Those two races also served as the semifinal matchups in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, setting up a final-round showdown between Glenn and Hartford later Saturday.
Elsewhere, Jeg Coughlin Jr. delivered one of the best performances of the session. Coughlin blasted to a 6.682-second run and Enders was actually slightly quicker on elapsed time with a 6.675.
Aaron Stanfield continued his strong weekend with a 6.692-second pass next to Matt Latino. Stanfield's .017 reaction time helped him secure the win despite Latino's competitive 6.689-second effort.
Troy Coughlin Jr. ran better than Stephen Bell with a 6.703-second run after leaving first with an excellent .005 reaction time.
Eric Latino continued to show consistency, posting a 6.711-second run to better than Shane Tucker, who encountered major issues and slowed to a 17.530-second pass.
Cody Anderson rounded out the session's winners with a strong 6.688-second run at 205.29 mph after Kenny Delco ran into trouble and slowed dramatically.
Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge
The Pro Stock semifinals delivered exactly the type of side-by-side action fans have come to expect.
- Dallas Glenn defeated Greg Anderson by .006-second despite Anderson posting the quicker elapsed time.
- Matt Hartford defeated Greg Stanfield by just .004-second in the closest race of the session.
The results advance Glenn and Hartford into the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge final, where two of the category's hottest drivers will battle for bonus money and bragging rights later Saturday.
Q3 Highlights
- Quickest Run: Matt Hartford, 6.658 seconds
- Fastest Speed: Matt Hartford, 206.95 mph
- Closest Race: Matt Hartford over Greg Stanfield by .004-second
- Best Reaction Time: Troy Coughlin Jr., .005
- 2Fast2Tasty Final: Matt Hartford vs. Dallas Glenn
- Holeshot Victory: Dallas Glenn defeated Greg Anderson despite Anderson's quicker elapsed time.
Saturday Outlook
The biggest takeaway from Q3 was just how little separates the top of the Pro Stock field. Hartford, Glenn, Anderson, Enders, Stanfield, and the Coughlin entries are all running within hundredths of a second of one another. With Bristol's new surface continuing to produce outstanding side-by-side racing, Sunday's eliminations are shaping up to be a reaction-time battle where every thousandth will matter.
Pro Stock Motorcycle Q3 Notes: Herrera Holds Strong as Riders Battle Changing Conditions
Saturday's third Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying session at the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals proved considerably more challenging than Friday's runs, with warmer track temperatures and changing conditions making improvements difficult for much of the field.
Despite the tougher conditions, Gaige Herrera continued to show why he's the rider everyone is chasing this weekend.
Herrera posted a clean 6.890-second pass at 196.36 mph to best Joey Gladstone's performance and maintain his momentum heading into the final qualifying session. While the run did not improve on his earlier efforts, it demonstrated the consistency that has made the former world champion such a formidable force.
Steve Johnson also turned in one of the strongest runs of the session. The veteran rider recorded a 6.883-second pass at 194.24 mph to outdo Brayden Davis after Davis encountered immediate problems and slowed to a 10.986-second pass. Johnson's run was among the quickest completed passes of Q3 and provided a significant boost to his qualifying position.
Chase Van Sant continued his solid Bristol weekend with a 6.946-second run at 196.85 mph, one of the fastest speeds of the session. Van Sant's consistency throughout qualifying has quietly placed him among the riders to watch heading into race day.
Kelly Clontz also stayed in the six-second zone, posting a 6.956-second pass against Wesley Wells. Wells encountered severe difficulties and coasted to an 18.563-second elapsed time, allowing Clontz to secure the easy victory.
Geno Scali picked up his performance after John Hall was unable to make a run. Scali recorded a 7.049-second pass at 193.29 mph to collect valuable qualifying points.
Chris Bostick turned in a clean 7.054-second run, while Marc Ingwersen recorded a 7.297-second pass in a solo effort as teams focused on gathering information ahead of the final session.
Several riders who had shown strong potential earlier in the weekend were unable to complete representative runs. Gladstone, Davis, Wells, and Hall all experienced issues that prevented meaningful improvements.

Unlike the hero conditions seen Friday evening, Q3 became a session of survival and execution. Herrera remains the benchmark entering the final round of qualifying, but the battle behind him remains incredibly tight. With Smith, Oehler, Van Sant, Johnson, Gadson, and several others still searching for incremental gains, the final qualifying session could dramatically reshape the eliminations ladder before Sunday's earlier 10 a.m. start.
Top Fuel Q4: Coming Up Next

Top Fuel Q4 Notes: Kalitta Claims No. 1 Spot, Pruett Falls in 2Fast/2Tasty Final
The final Top Fuel qualifying session at the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals delivered a dramatic finish to an already eventful weekend at Bristol Dragway. As teams continued to learn the nuances of the newly paved racing surface, several contenders posted strong runs, but it was Doug Kalitta who finished the day exactly where he wanted to be— atop the qualifying order.
Kalitta capped qualifying with a 3.922-second pass at 314.90 mph, edging Leah Pruett in one of the most anticipated matchups of the day. The run secured Kalitta's hold on the No. 1 qualifying position and completed a strong rebound after some struggles earlier on Saturday.
Pruett was nearly equal to Kalitta on performance, posting a 3.918-second run at 325.45 mph, but Kalitta's .065 reaction time gave him a narrow .0182-second victory at the stripe.
Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge
The Kalitta-Pruett matchup also served as the Top Fuel final of the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge.
Pruett entered the final riding tremendous momentum after winning the delayed NHRA New England Nationals title Friday evening and advancing through the Challenge semifinals earlier today. Kalitta, however, spoiled the sweep, using a strong starting-line advantage and a clean 3.922-second run to defeat Pruett and claim the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge victory.
The win gives Kalitta additional bonus money and momentum heading into eliminations.
Brown, Stewart Continue Strong Form
Antron Brown turned in one of the quickest runs of the session, posting a 3.949-second pass at 311.92 mph. Brown defeated Tony Schumacher, whose run ended almost immediately after launch and slowed to an 18.719-second elapsed time.
Tony Stewart continued his impressive Bristol performance with a 4.005-second pass at 299.46 mph against Josh Hart. Stewart's consistent weekend has kept him firmly among the contenders heading into race day.
Justin Ashley also rebounded with a solid 3.950-second run at 304.94 mph, defeating Clay Millican in a competitive side-by-side pairing.
Reed and Gordon Shine
Shawn Reed continued one of the strongest weekends of his season, recording a 4.069-second run at 281.19 mph to best Shawn Langdon. Reed's team has steadily improved throughout qualifying and enters eliminations with valuable momentum.

Not everyone enjoyed a smooth final qualifying session.

Tony Schumacher's run ended almost immediately after launch, while Keith Murt also struggled with traction and posted a 9.802-second effort.

Heading into Eliminations
The final qualifying session reinforced just how competitive the Top Fuel field has become. Kalitta enters race day with the No. 1 qualifier trophy and a #2Fast2Tasty Challenge victory, but Pruett, Brown, Stewart, Ashley, Hart, Torrence, and several others have shown the ability to run at the front of the pack. With cooler conditions expected Sunday morning and eliminations beginning early at 10 a.m., the stage is set for an unpredictable battle in Thunder Valley.
