Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals Saturday preview
After a brief rain delay that halted round one of qualifying at Gainesville Raceway, teams took advantage of the cooler temperatures that followed Friday evening at the 57th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.
Crew chiefs made the best of the cool conditions as the night ticked on, including John Force Racing’s David Grubnic, who tuned Josh Hart to the provisional no. 1 pole in Top Fuel. Also taking advantage of the elements, Brian Husen put a tune-up in Shawn Langdon’s Kalitta Air Careers Top Fuel dragster to set a new track record at 338.09 mph.
Surprised by his performance on Friday night, Ron Capps rose to the top in Funny Car and looks forward to winning a special 75th anniversary Diamond Wally this year.
Rejoining KB Titan in the offseason, Cody Coughlin has made his return to Pro Stock in a stellar way by going to the top of the leaderboard after round one of qualifying and maintaining his position. Second-generation racer Cody Anderson made his professional debut in the class and showed everyone that he learned a thing or two from his six-time world champion father, Greg.
Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Angie Smith is leading the field when she took over the provisional no. 1 position in the second round of qualifying. However, reigning champ Richard Gadson isn’t far behind and ready to continue his winning ways as the season gets underway.
Saturday’s festivities will be highlighted by the Right Trailers Top Fuel All-Star Callout, where eight qualified drivers will compete for a total purse of $130,000. Reining Top Fuel champion and defending callout winner Doug Kalttia is looking to be the first driver to collect back-to-back wins in the specialty race.
Kalitta is set for a rematch with Clay Millican, followed by the battle of the Shawn’s - Shawn Reed and Shawn Langdon. Then, Antron Brown called out Josh Hart, which left Tony Stewart and Justin Ashley, who will also be going up against his former crew chief, Mike Green, paired up with one another.
