NHRA is scheduling an early 10 a.m. start to Sunday’s final eliminations at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals as weather could become an issue during the day.

Race teams are expecting at minimum an overcast sky that would have the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip race course in prime condition for record runs.

On the line will be event championship Wally trophies in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. The other Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series classes completed eliminations Saturday.

The Funny Car racers are especially excited about raceday as there is a special trophy on the line for the winner of the event, which is NHRA’s milestone 1,000th Funny Car race.

J.R. Todd claimed the No. 1 qualifying spot, but nine drivers qualified in the three-second zone, so racing will be tight and exciting for the prestigious award.

Leah Pruett, in her return to the Pomona track for the first time since the fall of 2023 when she came one win light away from winning the world championship, qualified No. 1 in Top Fuel and will get a bye run in the opening round.

Six-time Pro Stock world champion Greg Anderson made three 6.5-second passes to lead qualifying, but didn’t make it down the track on his final attempt, but with 16 wins at the track, he’s still the odds-on favorite.
