Cowie, Westerfield claim first U.S. Nationals Top Alcohol victories

In addition to the thrilling Mission Foods Drag Racing Series action at the Cornwell Quality Tires NHRA U.S. Nationals, nine Lucas Oil Series winners also claimed “Big Go” titles at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Reigning Top Alcohol Dragster world champ Shawn Cowie added another glowing item to a jam-packed racing resumé with his first U.S. Nationals crown. Cowie raced to the final-round victory with a 5.25 after his opponent, noted engine builder Jamie Noonan, had to abort his effort. [video]

Past world champ Shane Westerfield, the 2021 U.S. Nationals Top Alcohol Funny Car runner-up, went the distance this time in his Take 2 Services Camaro, collecting the long-sought victory on a strong final-round 5.67 after his opponent, two-time Indy runner-up Annie Whiteley, ran into trouble on her run. Twenty-four years after falling one win short of a U.S. Nationals title, Comp veteran Robert Bailey claimed the biggest win of his decorated career with his Indiana-based A/ED, collecting win No. 10 with a 036 to .089 holeshot after both he and his final-round opponent, two-time Indy winner Doug Engels, ran .45-second under their respective indexes. Tyler Caheely has now won five NHRA national event titles but none as big as his latest win in Super Stock at the U.S. Nationals. Caheely won the final after championship leader Joe Santangelo fouled. [video]

Five-time Super Stock world champion Jimmy DeFrank scored his second Indy win after a close Stock victory against Todd Hoven. DeFrank opened with a .003 light and drove to a 10.024 on his 10.01 dial for the win. [video]

Landon Exner made his first career national event victory a memorable one by winning the U.S. Nationals Super Comp title. In a final round decided by just .005 second, Exner’s. slight .004 to .009 reaction time advantage was the difference as both drivers ran 8.908. [video]

Mike McMasters won a thrilling double-breakout final round to clinch the Indy Super Gas crown. McMasters ran a near-perfect 9.897 and turned on the win light by a thousandth of a second after his opponent, 2002 NHRA Finals champ Bob Locke, clocked a 9896 after a strong .009 reaction time. [video]

Coming off a win at the Division 5 event in Brainerd, Jim Prevo put himself in contention for the Right Trailers Top Dragster title after topping Holden Laris in the final round. Prevo was solid with a .008 light and a .02-over 6.187. [video]

Darian Boesch is the current leader in Right Trailers Top Dragster and Top Sportsman and he’s also an Indy winner after beating Jimmy Lewis in the final with a 6.261 against his 6.24 prediction. [video]
