American Rebel Light Virginia NHRA Nationals Saturday preview
As the 2025 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series regular season heads for the halfway point, all attention will be focused on this weekend’s fifth annual American Rebel Light Virginia NHRA Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park
For the second straight year, the event will a unique two-day race format in the professional classes, with three qualifying sessions in Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock Motorcycle on Saturday and eliminations on Sunday. Saturday’s action will also include the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge competition, which will run concurrently with the second and third qualifying sessions.
Four-time Top Fuel world champ Steve Torrence, winner at the tour’s most recent stop in Bristol, Tenn., will be part of the Mission Challenge field, facing off against points leader Tony Stewart, while second-place driver Shawn Langdon will square off against Justin Ashley.
Austin Prock, the reigning Funny Car champion, won his first Virginia NHRA Nationals last year and could use a strong weekend to offset back-to-back first-round losses at the last two events. Prock still leads the points but just barely over 2025’s most improved racer, Paul Lee, while Prock’s John Force Racing teammate, Jack Beckman, has two wins this year. The loaded field also includes four-time world champ Matt Hagan, three-time champ and recent Bristol winner Ron Capps, and Epping winner J.R. Todd.
Gaige Herrera, the two-time reigning champion, once again leads the Pro Stock Motorcycle points. He has two wins on the season and currently leads six-time champion Matt Smith. Other riders to watch will be Bristol winner Richard Gadson, Smith’s wife, Angie, as well as Chase Van Sant, Steve Johnson, and Jianna Evaristo.
Competition also will be featured in the NHRA Lucas Oil Series, Congruity NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, NHRA Holley EFI Factory X and Pingel Top Fuel Motorcycle
