Repeat winners Butner, Bellemeur make history at Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals
In addition to the exciting Mission Foods Drag Racing Series action at the Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals, event champions were also crowned in nine Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series classes at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, led by Bo Butner’s history-making win in Super Gas.
Bo Butner made U.S. Nationals history in Super Gas, becoming the first NHRA Sportsman racer (outside of Top Alcohol Funny Car) to win Indy three straight years. The former Pro Stock and Comp world champ drove his Jim Butner Auto Sales Corvette to a near-perfect 9.901 in the final round to defeat fellow Hoosier Dalton Deffenbaugh, winner of Super Street earlier this year in Chicago. Hunter Green collected the fourth and biggest score of his young Top Alcohol Dragster career by winning the U.S. Nationals. Green took an impressive 5.23 solo pass after three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Angelle Sampey’s engine sprung an oil leak on the starting line in her first Top Alcohol Dragster final-round appearance. Sean Bellemeur became just the third driver in Top Alcohol Funny Car history to win the U.S. Nationals three straight years – Frank Manzo and Pat Austin being the others – after returning veteran Stan Sipos, appearing in his first final round in more than 30 years, red-lighted away the title. Second-generation Comp racer Kayla Mozeris won her third career national event title in her third different class as the former Super Stock and Stock victory driving Clint Neff’s Ford-powered K/AA Bantam around Joe Carnasciale’s clutch .025 reaction time in the final round, (-.55) 7.41 to (-.45) 8.93. Two weeks after recording a perfect run in Brainerd, Larry Hodge earned the fifth and biggest win of his career in Super Stock at the Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals. Hodge secured the win after Jacob Delaune fouled in the final. [video]
Josh Decker pulled off an upset when he stopped 107-time national event winner Dan Fletcher in the Stock final. Both drivers ran well under their respective dial-ins, but Decker was closer with a 10.522 on his 10.57. [video]
Trene Cressonie emerged the win from a huge, 144-car Super Comp field at Indy, driving the Laris Motorsports Insurance dragster to an 8.907 to 8.908 final-round decision over five-time tour winner Jason Kenny. Cressonie had a comfortable .012 to .44 edge at the Tree. [video]
The Right Trailers Top Dragster field was brutal with a 6.22 bump but Zach Sackman not only managed to qualify, but also won the sport’s biggest event by topping former world champ Darian Boesch in the final. Sackman won with a 6.180 against his 6.16 prediction. [video]
Bill Yates, the first driver to win Super Comp at Indy, added a second win in Right Trailers Top Sportsman. Yates was nearly perfect in the final with a .008 light and a 6.512 on his 6.51 dial to stop Curt Fredrich. [video]
