Fricke repeats in Top Alcohol Dragster to highlight Seattle Sportsman action
Ten champions were crowned in NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competition at the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways, led by Jackie Fricke, who won in Top Alcohol Dragster for the second straight year.
East Coast superstar Jackie Fricke made her trek west pay off for the second straight year, going back-to-back in Top Alcohol Dragster in Seattle. Fricke, who had battled through five regional runner-ups this year, notched her first win with the Nighthawk Sweepers-backed, John Finke-owned A/Fuel Dragster when world champ Joey Severance smoked the tires in the final. Twenty-two years after he collected his first of his 23 career Top Alcohol Funny Car Wallys at Pacific Raceways, world champ Doug Gordon added another victory to his retirement season with a solid 5.47 pass after Annie Whiteley had to abort her final-round effort. [video]
After years of planning to attend this event, Joe Arrowsmith and family finally made it from Minnesota to the Great Northwest and made it pay off with a Comp victory, the second of his career, when he powered his F/AA GTO to victory after local favorite Cody Lane red-lighted by .006-second. [video]
After three runner-up finishes, including the 2011 Seattle event, Rick McKinney powered to his first national event victory when he stopped Don Thomas in the Super Stock final round. McKinney won with a 10.58 on his 10.48 dial after Thomas slowed. [video]
Stock winner Justin Lamb joined an exclusive club by winning his 30th NHRA Wally and his second in Seattle. Lamb overcame opponent Greg Kielman’s nearly-perfect .005 light to win with a 9.814 against his 9.80 dial. [video]
Reigning Division 6 Super Comp champ Garrett Sides scored his first career NHRA national event triumph, tying a 011 reaction time to an 8.912 to force defending event champ Dylan Hough into an 8.888 breakout. Hough was also the runner-up in Top Dragster. [video]
Paul Nero, who scored his first national event win in Super Street in Seattle in 2000 and has since won five times in Top Dragster, added a Super Gas Wally to his collection, following up a pair of earlier perfect 9.900 passes with a final-round 9.932 to defeat Lindsey Larson’s 9.96. [video]
Hometown hero Brian McGinnis wheeled his grandmother’s ’56 Chevy to his first career national event, winning a near-dead heat Super Street final against another local hitter, Dustin Ward, 10.951 to 10.971. [video]
For the third straight year, Tom Bayer claimed the win in Right Trailers Top Dragster in Seattle. Bayer’s latest victory came at the expense of reigning Division 6 champ Dylan Hough, who broke out by .014-second. [video]
Nearly 40 years after winning his first NHRA national event title, Mike Ferderer is still going strong. Ferderer’s latest win came when he ran a 7.119 on his 7.07 dial against Bryan Warr in the final of Right Trailers Top Sportsman. [video]
