NHRA Arizona Nationals Sportsman video highlights
Winternationals champs Leo Glasbrenner and Dave Meziere continued their hot streaks by winning their second events of the season at the NHRA Arizona Nationals at World Horse Pass Motorsports Park outside of Phoenix.
Former world champ Ryan McClanahan earned his 10th career win and second in Phoenix when he grabbed the Super Stock title. McClanahan made a solo run in the final with his quick SS/AM Cobalt after opponent Larry McLanahan was a no-show. [video]
A week after winning in Pomona, Glasbrenner continued his perfect start by winning his ninth national event title in Phoenix. In the Stock final round, Glasbrenner drove his COPO Camaro past Jeff Jerome’s vintage Plymouth with a perfect 9.41 on his 9.41 dial. Jerome was able to match Glasbrenner in the reaction-time department but ran a hundredth off his dial with a 10.16. [video]
The fourth time was the charm for Dan Foley to finally collect his first career win in Super Comp. Foley, whose 8.901 in round one made his SDPC RaceShop/Foley Electric Service dragster the low qualifier, repeated that number in the final round to deny Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com champ James Glenn his second straight win by just .007-second. Glenn was right there with an 8.905 of his own in the final. [video]
Seventeen years after his breakthrough first career win in Phoenix, Mark Yeager was back for seconds in Super Gas. The California driver wheeled his West Coast Architectural Sheet Metal ’63 Corvette roadster to a tight .012-second final-round package, tying a .007 reaction time to a near-perfect 9.905, to defeat 2020 Dodge NHRA Finals winner Mike Boehner’s 9.924. Racing at an NHRA national event for the first time at his home track couldn’t have gone any better for Matthew Bong, who wheeled his 427-powered Mustang to his first career win in Super Street. Bong had his car expertly dialed in the final, running a near-perfect 10.901 to defeat Troy Grant, who took too much stripe and broke out with a 10.882 to just miss grasping his fourth career Wally. Art Hoover ran his record to a perfect 3-0 in final rounds following his final-round win against Rodger Comstock in Top Dragster presented by Vortech Superchargers. Hoover, who won the last Top Dragster event in Phoenix in 2020, claimed the double-breakout final with a 6.428 on his 6.44 dial. Comstock, who races alongside his wife, Karen, defeated Phil Dion to reach the final. [video]
Meziere is a perfect two for two to start the 2022 season after he followed his Pomona victory with another win in Phoenix. Meziere ran his winning streak to 10 rounds in Top Sportsman presented by Vortech Superchargers, including a single in the final after Mike Ferderer could not answer the call. Meziere now has seven national event victories. [video]
