GUSSO BROS. HOME-BUILT SUPER MOD COBALT
Longtime Division 5 Comp racers Travis Gusso and his brother, Trent, embody the do-it-yourself mentality that is increasingly rare in this day and age.
Rather than pay to have someone build their race cars, the Gusso brothers spent countless hours in their garage in Sioux Falls, S.D., welding and fabricating the chassis for their Super Modified Cobalt. The end result is not only a show qualify vehicle, but also a competitive race car that was built to 25.2 specs, meaning it is certified to run elapsed times as quick as 6.0-seconds.
In its current configuration as a D/Super Modified car, the Cobalt features a 314-cid small block built by Larry Allen and a Liberty 5-speed clutchless transmission. The Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals was just the third outing for the car but Travis Gusso claims that so far, the car has been flawless.
At Indy, Gusso qualified No. 34 out of 51 entries and upset No. 9 qualifier Cary Bales before a red-light start ended his weekend in round two.
