Stewart, Prock, Glenn, and Herrera are crowned NHRA regular season champions
Tony Stewart, Austin Prock, Dallas Glenn, and Gaige Herrera picked up an added bonus during the Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals as they were each awarded regular season championships.
Stewart and his TSR Nitro team clinched the $150,000 bonus as the regular season Top Fuel champs in round two. Stewart advanced with a win against Kyle Wurtzel while 2023 NHRA Top Fuel champion Doug Kalitta lost to Justin Ashley.
Stewart’s second season in Top Fuel has been impressive as the three-time NASCAR champion won his first race in Las Vegas and scored again a few races later in Chicago. Stewart led the battle for the Mission Foods NHRA title from Chicago to Norwalk, a stretch of five events, before being bumped to second by Shawn Langdon.
In Funny Car, Prock has been lights out this season as the reigning world champ has won six of the first 13 events and has maintained first place since the Las Vegas event in March. Prock was able to clinch the regular season title, and the accompanying $150,000 bonus simply by qualifying for the 16-car field at Indy.
The battle in Pro Stock was substantially closer as KB Titan Teammates Dallas Glenn and Greg Anderson came in separated by just nine points. Anderson cut that margin to just two points during qualifying, but Glenn sealed the deal in the quarterfinals by beating Jeg Coughlin Jr., while Anderson suffered a rare early defeat at the hands of Fernando Cuadra Jr. Glenn will pocket $55,000 for sealing the top spot in Pro Stock.
Two-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Herrera came to Indy with a comfortable but not insurmountable lead over his teammate Richard Gadson. Herrera needed to reach the semifinals in order to clinch the $15,000 regular season bonus and did so with wins against Chris Bostick and Angie Smith.
All four regular season champions will now enter the Countdown to the Championship playoffs as the top seeds in their respective eliminators. The playoffs will begin at the next event, the 40th annual NHRA Reading Nationals presented by Nitro Fish at historic Maple Grove Raceway.
