Six Sportsman champs crowned at PlayNHRA Virginia Nationals
In addition to the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series action at the PlayNHRA Virginia Nationals, champions were also crowned in six Lucas Oil Series classes at Virginia Motorsports Park.
Joe Carnasciale left first and then ran a competitive (-.556) 8.944 to win his second Comp title over Michele Costa, who ran (-.603) 8.177 in a final decided by .03-second at the finish line. Had Costa won, she would have become the milestone 100th female winner in NHRA national event competition. [video]
Jeff Adkinson carried the momentum from his recent runner-up in Bristol to Richmond where he defeated PJ Fouts in the Super Stock final to earn his fifth national event Wally. Adkinson finished the job with a 9.345 on his 9.34 dial. [video]
Following on the heels of a win at the Baby Gators, Division 2 Lucas Oil Series event, Cody Phillips claimed his first national event victory by stopping Cliff Hynson in the Stock final. Phillips was solid in the final with a .020 light and a 10.372 on his 10.36 dial. [video]
Richmond native and two-time world champ Anthony Bertozzi was nearly unstoppable in the Super Comp final with a .002 light and an 8.907 that forced opponent Amanda Boicesco into an 8.884 breakout. [video]
Keith Mayers is primarily known for his work in Super Street, but he’s also an accomplished Super Gas racer. Mayers won his fourth national event title in Richmond with a 9.888 after opponent Don Knoblick fouled by .002-second. [video]
One week after a runner-up finish at the GALOT Division 2 event, 2019 Top Sportsman world champ Sandy Wilkins claimed his fifth national event title by beating Jeff Brooks in the final. Wilkins left second but won after Brooks ran out by .001-second. [video]
