WATCH: Mike Salinas captures provisional Top Fuel pole at Route 66 NHRA Nationals
Mike Salinas took his Alan Johnson-tuned Top Fuel dragster to the top of the field in the second qualifying session at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals. He made the only run in the 3.60s, a 3.693-second pass at 328.3 mph, to leap past three-time champion Antron Brown and defending champion Steve Torrence.
Top Fuelers struggled to get down the track depsite cool conditions. That didn't seem to trouble multi-time champion tuner Johnson, who sent Salinas down the track six-hundredths of a second quicker than any other racer. Brown is in the No. 2 position with a 3.753-second pass. Torrence is in third with a 3.757.
Scott Palmer sits on the bump spot with a 3.962, while former event winners Richie Crampton and Terry McMillen are not in qualifying positions with two qualifying laps yet to be run. The third qualifying round begins at Route 66 Raceway at 2:30 p.m. [Tickets]
