WATCH: J.R. Todd makes best pass of second Chicago Funny Car session
J.R. Todd made the best pass of the second qualifying session to earn three points and move into the No. 2 position at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals outside of Chicago. The defending Funny Car champion slotted in behind 2016 champion Ron Capps, who made a 3.893-second run in the first qualifying session to take the qualifying lead in his NAPA Brakes Funny Car.
Todd's 3.907-second pass put him ahead of Kalitta Motorsports teammate Shawn Langdon, who ran a 3.938 during a qualifying session where most Funny Cars failed to make it down the race track. That was after a first session where every car made it to the finish line under power. Paul Lee ended up on the bump spot with a 4.061-second pass, a few hundredths of a second away from the quickest in NHRA history.
Teams will have an opportunity to better that pace when cars return to the track at 2:30 p.m. Central Saturday. [Tickets]
