Robert Hight, Auto Club team go to backup chassis for final qualifying session
After sandwiching a decent 3.938 in Friday’s night session with two four-second passes in the daytime sessions, the Auto Club Funny Car team switched to a new chassis for the final session.
Crew chiefs Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham made the call after the Q3 run, a disappointing 4.131.
“That chassis just hada lot of runs on it,” explained Prock. “Robert is having to steer the car too much, which obviously isn’t normal. We’ve already got about 100 runs on this chassis; sometimes these cars just get tired.”
The replacement car is one that was front halved over the winter and was tested on Monday after the Las Vegas event in April.
It’s been a challenge since Richmond, not just in the driving but there are times when it just doesn’t leave the line like it should,” added Hight.
Hight charted a solid 3.943 on that final pass, not better than their Friday night pass but their best run in the sunshine that they'll see Sunday.
