Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals Saturday Preview
Welcome to Day 2 of the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park where final qualifying today will set the fields for Sunday's final eliminations.
Yesterday, a pair of impressive runs by Brittany Force and her father, John, set the pace in Top Fuel and Funny Car respectively. Brittany opened Top Fuel qualifying with a solid 3.738 in her Advance Auto Parts dragster and then brought the house down in Q2 with a thrilling 3.661 at 332.18, both of which are Houston Raceway Park track records. Steve Torrence is second quickest, but he is four-hundredths behind with a 3.703.
The Funny Car field is much more competitive with John Force holding a slim lead over a tough field with a 3.888 in his Blu Def Camaro. Should Force maintain his lead through today's two scheduled sessions, it will be the 156th time he has qualified No. 1 and his first pole since the 2017 Gainesville race. Today, much attention will be focused on Force's teammate, Robert Hight, who is not yet qualified. The two time champion is currently ranked No. 17 out of 17 cars with a 5.342 best. He needs to run quicker than 5.169 to make the field.
