Justin Ashley started his Top Fuel career nearly perfectly. He cut a .041-second reaction time and, more importantly, turned on the win light.

Ashley, who made his Top Fuel debut at the NTK NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte, defeated Mike Salinas in the first round of racing despite running only 298-mph in his social media-inspired Top Fuel dragster tuned by Aaron Brooks. He outran Salinas, who entered Monday race day third in points in his Alan Johnson-tuned machine. Ashley left first and extended his lead down track to move to the second round on the first race day of his professional career.
