The bottom half of the bracket enjoyed a successful first round of eliminations at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals. No. 1 and No. 2 qualifiers Mike Salinas and Antron Brown tied for low elapsed time (3.736-seconds apiece), but four racers in the top half of the bracket were sent to the trailer early.

The biggest upset came at the hands of Pat Dakin. The Ohio native defeated Dom Lagana with a 3.798-second lap and a superior reaction time to boot. The veteran racer will take on Doug Kalitta in the second round in another tough matchup. Richie Crampton, Jordan Vandergriff and hometown hero T.J. Zizzo also scored on-paper upsets in the first round.

Second-round pairings (lane choice first): Mike Salinas vs. T.J. Zizzo; Doug Kalitta vs. Pat Dakin; Antron Brown vs. Jordan Vandergriff; Steve Torrence vs. Richie Crampton
