Jordan Vandergriff

Southern California Auto Club Road to the Future candidate Jordan Vandergriff ran five-hundredths quicker than the rest of the field to earn three points and take the Top Fuel pole; at least, for now. That’s better than three-time champion Antron Brown (two points) and Doug Kalitta (one point).

There are a whole lot of race wins chasing Vandergriff, who is racing for the same team (Bob Vandergriff Racing) that reached the final round at the Arby’s NHRA Southern Nationals a year ago. The car was driven by Blake Alexander at the time and fell to Leah Pritchett, who is currently qualified No. 9.

Brittany Force and Clay Millican, now linked by tuner Dave Grubnic (currently tuning Force and formerly tuner of Millican) are qualified fifth and sixth, respectively. Those are all the dragsters in the 3-second range as many dragsters struggled with a tricky track on a hot, humid day in the southeast. There is one more session scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern.
