Antron Brown made the quickest run of the first round (3.771) to beat the second-quickest run of the round (3.779), run by Clay Millican. That booked Brown a matchup with Brittany Force in the second round. She defeated Cameron Ferre, who smoked the tires right off the hit at the Arby’s NHRA Southern Nationals. 

Shawn Reed snagged the biggest upset of the first round as he took down Doug Kalitta from the No. 14 position in his Hughes Oil Field Transportation dragster, backed by Bob Vandergriff Racing. Both BVR dragsters reached the second round as Jordan Vandergriff scored a victory, earning him a matchup with Leah Pritchett in the second round.
