Hickey, Cummings add names to winners list at Texas Motorplex Division 4 event

Adam Hickey and Slate Cummings captured Sunday wins in Comp and Super Stock, respectively, at the NHRA South Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Double-Header at Texas Motorplex.

In the final results from Texas Motorplex and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series two local racers claimed victories taking home the trophies in Stock Eliminator and Super Street. In Stock, Jeff Lopez, Irving, Texas, made a winning pass against Jerry Emmons in the final round with a time of 9.387 seconds, 136.91 mph, making this Lopez’s second win of the double header weekend. In Supper Street, John Long Jr, Red Oak, Texas, went up against John Leibham with a very tight finish taking the win with a run of 10.873, 121.40.

A pair of NHRA South Central Division hitters went to battle in the Super Stock final and reigning division champion Ross Laris took on Darian Boesch in the SDPC Top Dragster Final. Larris, Raceland, La., took the win running 6.050 seconds at 234.04 mph to Boesch’s 6.114, 222.66.  Slate Cummings out ran Jimmy Hidalgo in Super Stock clocking in at 9.414, 139.18 in his ’03 Cavalier to Hidalgo’s 9.737, 134.08 in his ’99 Firebird.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Adam Hickey, Ponchatoula, La., in Comp Eliminator; Steve Collier, Benton, La., in Super Comp and Jim Capp, Willis Texas, in Super Gas, In the division’s Top Sportsman class it was Allen Firestone, Velma, Okla., taking the win and in Sportsman Motorcycle it was Ricky Kay from Humble, Texas. 

In Saturdays action, Dean Dubbin, Royalton, Minn. and Kirk Williams, Glenwood, Iowa, took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

Dubbin, worked his way through the field and ran 5.566 seconds at 258.76 mph in his final round victory over Megan Meyer, Olathe, Kan., who clocked in at 11.313 seconds, 69.72 mph.

Williams faced off against Annie Whiteley, Grand Junction, Colo., and posted a winning run of 5.572 seconds, 260.51 mph in his ’04 Firebird. Whiteley drove to a 9.763 second, 95.11 mph lap for his runner up finish.

South Central Division racers head to Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park, Tulsa Okla. for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 8-10.

SATURDAY

ENNIS, Texas – In the first half of the double header NHRA South Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Texas Motorplex Dean Dubbin and Kirk Williams took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

 Dubbin, Royalton, Minn., came out of the No. 8 qualifying position and defeated Megan Meyer in the final for the win with a lap of 5.565 seconds, 258.76 mph.  Dubbin beat out No. 1 qualifier Shane Conway and Buddy Domingue in rounds one and two to advance to the final round.

 Williams qualified fourth and knocked out Kris Hool and Mark Billington to advance to the final round match up with Annie Whiteley.   Williams then laid down a lap of 5.572 seconds at 260.51 for the win as Whiteley had problems crossing the line at 9.763.

 In Comp eliminator it was Craig Bourgeois, Metairie, La., beating out Adam Hickey, Ponchatoula, La., and Korey Mawhee, Frisco, Texas, held off Justin Jenkins, Beatrice, Neb., in Super Stock

 Former Lucas Oil World Champion Jeff Lopez, Irving, Texas, took home the Stock trophy defeating Gary Emmons, Friendswood, Texas, in his ’18 COPO Camaro in 9.848 seconds at 110.66 mph and Robbie Mayse, Grandview, Texas, stopped the clocks at 8.974 seconds to beat Tommy Phillips, Forney, Texas, in Super Comp.

 Rounding out the winners were Vernon Rowland, Blanchard, Okla., in Super Gas; Jim Burrell, Claude, Texas, in Super Street; Martin Blair, Spicewood, Texas, in the SDPC Raceshop Top Sportsman; Darian Boesch, Kenner, La., in the SDPC Raceshop Top Dragster; and  Michael Mathews, Lagrange, Texas, in Sportsman Motorcycle.

The NHRA South Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Double-Header weekend takes place at Texas Motorplex, April 12-15. The double-header is two of six events in the NHRA South Central division and of the 44 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships, as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s SDPC Raceshop Top Sportsman and Top Dragster and NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series are also in competition.

Gates at Texas Motorplex open at 7 a.m. every day. The first race on the double-header starts with qualifying and time trials Thursday at 8 a.m. Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator qualify at 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eliminations begin Thursday afternoon and continue on Friday at 8 a.m.

The second race in the double-header starts on Saturday with qualifying and time trials at 8 a.m. Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator qualifying at 1:15 and 4:30 p.m. Eliminations begin Saturday evening and continue at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Saturday’s action will be highlighted by the NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout with racers from seven different classes battling it out for a posted purse of $15,000. Defending South Central Division Moser Sportsman Shootout Champion Slate Cummings has once again qualified for the 16-car field and looks to defend his title against the stacked field. 
Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run a single event with qualify on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. All three rounds of Eliminations are set for Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. 

Tickets for Texas Motorplex are $25 per day. Children 6-12 are just $10 per day. Children 5 and under are free.
