NHRA Today: Torrence trying to double-up
Steve Torrence began the season with a bang with a win at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals from the No. 1 qualifying spot. He also scored a win at the NHRA Summernationals and has qualified No. 1 eight times, more than doubling his previous career total.
The 2016 season hasn’t been without obstacles for the driver of the Richard Hogan-tuned Capco Contractors dragster. The Kilgore, Texas, native skipped the Norwalk event due to a heart attack suffered as a byproduct of radiation treatment during his battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2000. Torrence continued to battle through adversity and now feels better than ever behind the wheel of a race car that is performing in top condition.
Torrence set the national e.t. record at 3.671 seconds at the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals. His whopping tally of eight No. 1 qualifying spots leads drivers in all Mello Yello categories, though he is hoping for more wins to show for his strong qualifying efforts. He has the chance to double his total of two wins at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals by taking on Antron Brown in the rescheduled final from the Protect the Harvest NHRA Northwest Nationals presented by Lucas Oil on Saturday and competing in eliminations for the Brainerd event on Sunday. His 18-1 career head-to-head record against Brown in Brown’s favor is a lot to overcome, but the 2005 Top Alcohol Dragster champion has stood above taller obstacles in order to reach this position.
