Brown, Capps win delayed Seattle finals
Don Schumacher Racing doubled up on wins Saturday during the rain-delayed final rounds of the Protect the Harvest NHRA Northwest Nationals presented by Lucas Oil at Brainerd Int’l Raceway in Brainerd.
Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Ron Capps (Funny Car) were victorious in their respective final rounds from the Seattle event, which was postponed by persistent rain on Sunday, Aug. 7, and decided Saturday in the third round of qualifying at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd.
In Top Fuel, Brown pushed his dragster to the winner’s circle with a 3.747-second pass at 320.13 mph over Steve Torrence’s 4.062 at 243.19 to claim his fourth win of the year and 58th of his career. Brown, the 2009 Seattle winner, is the defending and a two-time Top Fuel world champion. Brown raced past T.J. Zizzo, Clay Millican, and Morgan Lucas en route to the final round of the Protect the Harvest NHRA Northwest Nationals presented by Lucas Oil.
“We’re pretty excited,” said Brown, who has already clinched his spot in the Countdown to the Championship and extended his Top Fuel points lead with the win. “All of our boys were pushing hard on that one. The track was tight, and it just gobbled it up. It felt good, and we got it done. It’s another Wally on the shelf.”
Torrence beat Scott Palmer, Richie Crampton, and J.R. Todd to make his fifth final-round appearance of the season.
Funny Car’s Capps powered to a 4.014 at 322.42 in his Dodge Charger R/T to outlast Del Worsham’s 6.010 at 133.58 in his Toyota Camry during the Seattle final round. Capps claimed his milestone 50th career win, fifth of the season, and second career win at the Seattle event. The second-winningest Funny Car driver of all time has a firm grip on the category points lead. He defeated Brandon Welch, Tommy Johnson Jr., and Jeff Diehl in the earlier rounds.
“My family is here, and this medal is going to my daughter who was in Seattle,” said Capps, who has also already secured a spot in the Countdown. “This trophy is going back to Seattle to all the fans back in Seattle and Oregon. It’s going to make its rounds, and I think they are going to be a little more rowdy out there.”
Worsham, the reigning Funny Car world champ, sprinted past Tim Gibbons, Robert Hight, and Matt Hagan to make his third final-round appearance of the season.
The Pro Stock final featuring Vincent Nobile and Aaron Strong, the completion of Seattle event, will be contested at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
