Veterans, first-timers share winner's circle at Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals

In addition to the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series action at the Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge, seven winners were crowned in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Sonoma Raceway.

A pair of NHRA’s recently named Top 75 Sportsman Drivers showed the skills that earned them that honor.

Jody Lang collected his 35th victory in Super Stock and his sixth at Sonoma Raceway when he drove his familiar SS/LA Malibu past two-time world champ Brad Burton to claim a double-breakout win.

Justin Lamb added his 37th career win in Stock at the wheel of his FS/C COPO, running a near-perfect 9.312 to defeat Darin Grossi. It was Lamb’s eighth victory at the Northern California raceplant.

Comp winner Clint Neff wheeled his J/Dragster Automatic entry to victory, the sixth of his career, by stopping local favorite Steve Graham in the final round.

Trey Vetter, who won last year’s Super Stock title at the Sonoma Nationals, went back-to-back, scoring this time in Super Comp, where he edged Grant Williamson in a thrilling 8.911 to 8.913 final round.

A first-time winner was crowned in Super Gas, where Doug Sedmak tied a .004 reaction time to a 9.914 to defeat multi-time winner Brad Pierce’s better-but-later 9.906.

Keith Winters was another first-time NHRA national event champion in Right Trailers Top Dragster after beating three-time Sonoma winner Tom Bayer in the final round by just a thousandth of a second.

Ken Ratzloff emerged the winner in Right Trailers Top Sportsman in his popular ’53 Studebaker, backing up his Sonoma win for eight years previous by defeating four-time tour winner Bryan Warr.
