Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals Friday preview
The 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series hits the halfway mark this weekend with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. The event will be the 10th of 20 races this season.
Heading into the event, Shawn Langdon, Ron Capps, Dallas Glenn, and Richard Gadson are the leaders in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle, respectively. Not surprisingly, all four drivers are former or current world champions.
Since being added to the NHRA calendar in 2007, the Norwalk event has become one of the most anticipated races of the season with nighttime qualifying on Friday followed by an epic fireworks display. Of course, the event winners are also rewarded with the popular Norwalk ice cream scoop.
Last year, Justin Ashley, Austin Prock, Cory Reed, and John Hall scored Pro wins in Norwalk, with Reed claiming his first title in Pro Stock.
The Top Fuel field appears to be wide open as so far this season, Langdon, Doug Kalitta, Tony Stewart, Josh Hart, Antron Brown, and Leah Pruett have already won at least one race. There are plenty of other candidates to join that group, including Ashley, Shawn Reed, Clay Millican, Tony Schumacher, Billy Torrence, and impressive rookie Maddi Gordon.
The Funny Car class features nearly the same level of parity as 2026 winners include Ron Capps, Chad Green, Matt Hagan, Austin Prock, Jack Beckman, and first-time winner Jordan Vandergriff. Once again, there are many qualified candidates who hope to join that group, including recent Bristol runner-up Daniel Wilkerson, J.R. Todd, Spencer Hyde, Alexis DeJoria, Cruz Pedregon, Dave Richards, and Blake Alexander, who has previously won in Norwalk in both Top Fuel and Funny Car.
Todd has yet to register a win in Funny Car this season, but he has been consistent with a runner-up in Adel and four semifinals with his DHL Toyota Supra.
In Pro Stock, Glenn and KB Titan teammate Greg Anderson are once again leading the way, as they’ve built a sizable advantage in the NHRA Mission Foods standings. That being said, Matt Hartford has claimed three wins, so the points battle is far from a runaway.
The KB Titan team has won the lion’s share of the special edition 75th anniversary diamond NHRA Wallys, but the rival Elite squad has made gains, including a win by Aaron Stanfield in Chicago and a runner-up by Troy Coughlin Jr. in Adel.
Elite’s Greg Stanfield and Erica Enders are also each seeded in the Top 10 after nine events.
Following suit, the Pro Stock Motorcycle class is also up for grabs, with Richard Gadson, Gaige Herrera, Matt Smith, and Angie Smith each with wins this season.
The landscape of the class recently changed as Matt Smith has been sidelined due to recent surgery, naming Joey Gladstone as his replacement. Gladstone is certainly a contender for the title, along with Ryan Oehler, Brayden Davis, Hall, Chase Van Sant, and Jianna Evaristo.
The Norwalk race will also feature the latest round of the JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, where Jason Collins has been the hottest driver in the class. The event also features the Flexjet NHRA Factory Stock Showdown as well as a full roster of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories, including Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Right Trailers Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman.
