Last season, Keith Mayers lost the Super Gas world championship via a tiebreaker against Val Torres Sr., who had to win the final race of the season in order to claim the title. This year, Mayers appears far more motivated than angry, as he’s solidly in contention for both national and divisional titles.

Mayers2

Mayers completed an eventful July with solid outings in both Super Gas and Super Street. In Super Gas, he won the Division 1 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Lebanon Valley Dragway and then followed with the trip to South Georgia Motorsports Park, where he scored a runner-up finish at the Division 2 event and a round-four showing at the JEGS NHRA SPORTSnationals. Mayers currently sits atop the Super Gas points standings, albeit by just a few points over Nathan Vrooman, although Mayers still has multiple races left to claim.

To cap off a successful month, Mayers also won the Division 2 event at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Super Street, a win that has him solidly in contention for the Division 1 Super Street title.

Honorable Mentions

Lamb

Justin Lamb went two for two in July when he won the Super Stock title at the Muckleshoot Casino Resort NHRA Northwest Nationals and then turned around and scored again in Stock a week later at the Denso NHRA Sonoma Naitonals presented by PowerEdge.

Kevin Helms drove a borrowed car to the Super Stock title at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk and then returned to his more familiar Oldsmobile to claim a second win at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

Lane
Jeff Lane put himself in contention for a long-awaited world title in Comp when he won the Seattle national event and then followed with a second win at the Division 6 doubleheader in Woodburn, Ore.

Brad Burton joined the list of double winners in July when he swept both ends of the Woodburn Dragway doubleheader in Super Stock. For good measure, he also added a quarterfinal showing in Stock eliminator.

Scarth
Larry Scarth is ranked solidly among the Top 10 in Super Gas thanks to a recent stretch of good fortune. Scarth drove his classic Corvette with a win at the Division 6 event in Woodburn and then followed by making it to the final round of the Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals.
