Qualifying at Arizona Nationals will set Pep Boys NHRA Top Fuel All-Stars Callout field
There’s a lot more on the line for Top Fuel drivers in qualifying at the NHRA Arizona Nationals than just making the 16-car field. The second event of the season is the final chance for last year’s Top 10 finishers to earn a spot in the eight-car field for the Pep Boys NHRA Top Fuel All-Star Callout, which will be held at the next event, the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.
In addition to pre-seeded reigning world champ Steve Torrence, the top seven qualifying points earners at the year’s first two events will qualify for the big-bucks shootout.
Here are the current standings:
1 | Steve Torrence (Secured) | 3,000 |
2 | Brittany Force | 2,675 |
3 | Mike Salinas | 2,605 |
4 | Justin Ashley | 2,565 |
5 | Antron Brown | 2,415 |
6 | Leah Pruett | 2,380 |
7 | Billy Torrence | 2,350 |
8 | Clay Millican | 2,300 |
9 | Shawn Langdon | 2,275 |
10 | Doug Kalitta | 2,240 |
With Torrence already pre-seeded into the field, the remaining nine drivers will battle for the seven available spots, earning points based on their final qualifying positions at the NHRA Arizona Nationals using the following format:
Qualifying Position | Points | Qualifying Position | Points | |
No. 1 | 175 | No. 9 | 120 | |
No. 2 | 165 | No. 10 | 115 | |
No. 3 | 155 | No. 11 | 110 | |
No. 4 | 145 | No. 12 | 105 | |
No. 5 | 140 | No. 13 | 100 | |
No. 6 | 135 | No. 14 | 95 | |
No. 7 | 130 | No. 15 | 90 | |
No. 8 | 125 | No. 16 | 85 |
With Billy Torrence not in attendance, the seventh and eighth spots are up for grabs in a fight between Clay Millican, Shawn Langdon, and Doug Kalitta, but with 17 cars fighting for the 16 spots in the NHRA Arizona Nationals field, a DNQ by any of the drivers ahead of them could put their chances in jeopardy.
Once the field is set, the competitors will call out their first-round opponent. No. 1 in points gets the first opportunity to call out their competitor. No. 2 in points the get the second opportunity to call out their competitor. If No. 1 in selects No. 2 in points, then No. 3 gets second pick, etc.
The callouts will take place on Friday, and all three eliminations rounds will be contested on Saturday. The first two rounds will also count towards qualifying for the national event; the final-round runs do not count towards qualifying.
The Pep Boys All-Star Callout for Funny Cars will take place on Sunday of the Dodge Power Brokers NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and feature the top eight qualifying-points earners since the 2021 NHRA U.S. Nationals. The last event to earn points will be the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals or the last event before the 2022 Dodge Power Brokers NHRA U.S. Nationals in case of event postponements.
