Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals to feature eight-car Mile High No Time Shootout
Fans who attend this week’s Dodge // SRT NHRA Mile-High Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Bandimere Speedway will have a chance to check out some of the world’s quickest street cars in the Mile-High No Time Shootout.
The unique event will feature eight of the sport’s most competitive big tire street cars. The format of the race will be an eighth-mile course with a Pro Tree start and adhering to traditional street car guidelines, the clocks will not be turned on for the event. There will be a single time trial run followed by three rounds of eliminations and it will all take place on Friday, July 16.
The eight drivers who will be competing for the special limited edition acrylic NHRA Wally trophy will be Royce Payton with his supercharged ’65 Mustang, Mike Dowling and his ProCharger-equipped ’70 Chevelle, Bret Meyer’s supercharged ’69 Mustang, Shawn Fink’s turbocharged ’55 Chevy 210, Lance Knigge’s twin-turbocharged ’67 Chevy Nova, Kevin Guthrie’s ProCharger-powered ’62 Bel Air, Nick Johanns’ ProCharged ’10 Camaro, and Tommy Johanns’ ProCharged ’18 Camaro.
Knigge, of Casper, Wyo., figures to be one of the pre-race favorites especially after driving his Nova to a win in the big tire class at the Street Car Takeover event held in Denver last weekend. Payton, of Ft. Collins, Colo., also turned in an impressive performance recently when he won the Unlimited Class during the Rocky Mountain Race Week “Drag and Drive” event that combined stops at four different dragstrips and over 1,000 miles of highway driving in temperatures that often crested above 100 degrees.
The Mile-High No Time Shootout, sponsored by Prodigy Motorsports, Elite Import & Auto Repair, Pit Mat USA, and J Diamond Cattle Company, will provide a preview of Mayhem on the Mountain, a streetcar event scheduled for August 27-28 at Bandimere Speedway featuring Big Tire N/T, Small Tire N/T, Limited Small Tire, Pro Star and Quick Star Classes.
