In the final results from Texas Motorplex and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, 2015 national Comp Eliminator champion Craig Bourgeois, Metairie, La., battled back and took home the win in a close finish. Bourgeois, as the No. 5 qualifier, worked his way through the field and ran 6.870 seconds at 185.08 mph in his final-round victory over No. 1 qualifier, Kevin Self, Caddo, Okla., who clocked a runner-up pass in at 7.707 seconds, 170.79 mph.

In Super Comp, Britt Cummings, Hammond, La. faced off against Jake Levatino, La Place, La., and posted a winning run of 8.929 seconds, 176.28 mph in his ’11 Phantom. Levatino drove an 8.929 second, 171.58 mph lap for his runner-up finish.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Joel Covington, Center, Texas in Super Stock; Brett Candies, Thibodaux, La. in Stock Eliminator; Tommy Phillips, Forney, Texas, in Super Gas; and Ray Dew, League, Texas, in Super Street. In the division’s SDPC Raceshop Top Sportsman class, Bob Gulitti, Tomball, Texas, took the win, while Jimmy Arabie, Baytown, Texas, won in SDPC Raceshop Top Dragster. Also, David Baugh, Moody, Texas, took home the win for the Sportsman Motorcycle title.

South Central Division racers head to Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 23-25.

PREVIEW

Texas Motorplex will play host to the NHRA South Central Division on April 28-30. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s SDPC Raceshop Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Series will also be run in conjunction with the event.

Saturday’s action will be highlighted by the NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout with racers from seven different classes battling it out for a posted purse of $15,000.  Defending South Central Division Moser Sportsman Shootout Champion Ray Dew has once again qualified for the 16-car field and is eager to defend his title.  Former national champion Austin Williams is qualified in both Stock and Super Comp and is looking to dethrone Dew.
