Rampy doubles at Atlanta Dragway
In the final results of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Southeast Division event at Atlanta Dragway, past national champions Kevin Brannon and Jeffrey Barker, as well as a double-up win from David Rampy highlighted the list of winners for the fifth of seven events in the Southeast Division.
Rampy, Piedmont, Ala., gained two trophies for his collection, taking home the win in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock. In Comp Eliminator, Rampy ran down Jim Kimbrough, Pace, Fla., posting a winning lap of 7.230 seconds at 183.62 mph. Rampy’s win in Super Stock was won at the Tree, defeating Alain Cauchon of Drummondville, Quebec.
2015 Top Sportsman national champion Barker, Kathleen, Ga., crossed the finish line at 176.95 mph in 6.792 seconds in his ’06 Cobalt, which held off Donny Urban, Selma, N.C., in his ’06 Cobalt for the win in the division’s Stott’s Ford Carts Top Sportsman class. It was a battle of national champions in the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster class. The title went to 2015 Super Comp national champion Kevin Brannon, Boiling Springs, S.C., who got the win over 2016 Stock and Top Dragster national champion Jeff Strickland. Brannon covered the quarter-mile in 6.169 seconds at 222.29 mph to Strickland’s 6.425 seconds at 214.55 mph.
In Stock, it was Daren Poole-Adams and Strickland making the trip to the final round. Poole-Adams, Shelby, N.C., got a big starting-line advantage and defeated Strickland. Poole-Adams went 10.329 seconds at 120.67 mph for the win over Strickland, Red Bay, Ala., and his lap of 9.519 seconds at 132.08.
Other Sportsman-class winners included John Taylor, White House, Tenn., who beat Raymond Miller in Super Gas, running 9.910 seconds at 161.27 mph in his ’99 Dakota; John Labbous, who took home the title in Super Comp; and Gaines Hickman, Monroe, Ga., who earned the Super Street trophy.
In the Jr. Dragster races, Carden won in the 6-9-year old-category; Tucker Brown, Blountville, Tenn., won in the 10-12-year-old class; and Morgan Wilson, of Larens, S.C. that took home the win in the 13-17-year-old category.
Southeast Division racers are heading to Silver Dollar Raceway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Oct. 14-15.

COMMERCE, Ga. - The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Southeast Division is racing into Atlanta Dragway for the fifth of the seven events in the division, this weekend, May 19-21, 2017. Drivers will be racing to earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000.
Racing categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s Stott’s Ford Top Sportsman Series and Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series will also be run in conjunction with the event. Tickets are $20 each day, with children age 12 and under free with paid adult. The schedule is as follows:
FRIDAY, May 19 – Single day ticket $20 per person
