Memorial Day weekend is the only weekend off for Del Worsham from now until July, but instead of taking a break, the driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car for Kalitta Motorsports has not only decided to go Funny Car racing that weekend but also to stage one of the first booked-in nitro shows in decades in Southern California.

Worsham will have one of four nitro Funny Cars on-site at the Barona 1/8-Mile Drag Strip facility and will be joined by Gary Densham, driver of the Densham Motorsports Funny Car; Paul Lee, driver of the McLeod Funny Car; and Brandon Welch, driver of the AutoAnything Funny Car. Worsham will be running a special scheme highlighting his 25 years in the sport of drag racing and his three NHRA and IHRA titles as nitro comes to the San Diego area for the first time.

“My daughters, Kate and Maddy, are scheduled to race at a Jr. drag racing event this weekend,” said Worsham. “However, then I got to talking to Rick [Reynolds, Barona Drag Strip track operator], and we talked about how cool it would be to have some nitro racing out at the event. Rick was totally for it, so I called in some favors, and people have been wholly supportive. I cannot believe how quickly everything got put together.”

In addition to the nitro Funny Cars and the Jr. drag racing event, Worsham has recruited Nostalgia Funny Cars driven by John Weaver, Will Martin, Alex Miladinovich, Dennis Swearingen, James Day, and Danny Gerber and Fuel Altereds driven by Jim Holtz, Nathan Bugg, Jeff Utterback, and Rodney Flournoy to truly make this a one-of-a-kind event.

Worsham wanted to highlight a few companies that have supported bringing nitro to the San Diego area.

“We could not have made this event happen without the support of AutoAnything, CP Carrillo, Kalitta Motorsports, McLeod, Red Line Oil, and TMS Titanium,” said Worsham.

Ticket prices are $25 for those 17 and older and $10 for children ages 10 to 16. Children under the age of 10 are free. The event is expected to sell out, so fans are encouraged to purchase tickets soon.
