After a roller-coaster start to the season that included a win in Pomona and a DNQ in Las Vegas, Ron Capps and crew found their groove during what many dub the Eastern Swing, winning in Epping, Englishtown, and Norwalk. That surge in June and July pushed Capps to the points lead, and he enters this weekend in Brainerd with a commanding 189-point advantage, the largest lead in any class.

Capps will have two opportunities to add to that lead this weekend because he and Del Worsham will stage the Seattle final during Saturday qualifying, and, of course, there’s the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals title on the line. Capps couldn’t have picked a better venue at which to stage a pair of races and go for a double because Brainerd Int’l Raceway has been one Capps’ best tracks (which may also be why it’s one of his favorites, too). Capps has collected five Brainerd Wallys, including three straight from 2012-2014. Capps was also the runner-up finisher in 2011, giving him a strong four-year run at the Minnesota facility.

Capps checked in with NHRA’s Lewis Bloom at the Wally Parks NHRA Studio to talk about his strong season, a potential Brainerd double, the Countdown to the Championship, and more.
