The drama that is the 2016 Countdown to the Championship escalated in St. Louis during the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals, the second round of the six round playoffs. On a day when many of the points leaders went out early, Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Alex Laughlin (Pro Stock), and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) held on to earn hard-fought wins in their respective professional classes. •Shawn Langdon single-handedly takes down Antron Brown, Doug Kalitta, and Tony Schumacher, the top three drivers in Top Fuel en route to his third win of the season
•After winning just one race in the regular season, Jack Beckman gets back into Countdown contention after driving his Infinite Hero Dodge to the Funny Car title.
•Alex Laughlin became the 63rd different driver to win a Pro Stock race, and second new winner this season, when he stopped Bo Butner in the final round.
•In a rematch of the Englishtown Pro Stock Motorcycle final, Jerry Savoie turns the tables on his Louisiana neighbor, Angelle Sampey. Takes first win of the season.
•The top two drivers in the J&A Services Pro Mod series met in the final with Troy Coughlin keeping his championship hopes alive by beating Rickie Smith.
