Steve Torrence won for the fourth-straight race, taking his Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster to the winner's circle at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals. He defeated Mike Salinas, who smoked the tires in his Scrappers Racing machine and failed to make it down the track under power.

Torrence, after failing to win in the first five races of his title defense season, has now won nearly half of the nine races contested. He ran a 3.763-second elapsed time to combine with a .040-second reaction time. That lethal combination already made him nearly untouchable before Salinas lost power.
