Low E.T. of the race changed hands four times during an action packed first round of Funny Car eliminations. Low qualifier J.R. Todd opened with a 3.906 on his bye run and was quickly bettered  by John Force with a 3.904 in his win over Dale Creasy. A resurgent Bob Tasca III shaded Force with a 3.902 before Robert Hight threw down a pat hand with a 3.897 that was more than enough to handle Shawn Langdon's Toyota.
