TOP STORIES
Despite recent DNQ, Beckman remains a confident championship contender
The statistics speak for themselves. Last season, eight different Funny Car drivers won, and not a single driver qualified for all 23 races. Thus far in 2008, the class seems to be following a similar script as six drivers have won in the first seven races and just five have made every show. With a confidence-inspiring win in Phoenix followed by a frustrating DNQ five races later in Madison, perhaps no one knows the ups and downs of modern Funny Car racing better than Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services driver “Fast Jack” Beckman.

“That’s just the nature of the beast right now,” said the former Super Comp national champion, who had previously qualified for 22 straight events, tops in the class prior to Madison. "It’s crazy. The competition is great for the fans, but for the drivers, crew chiefs, and team owners, it’s causing a lot of ulcers.”
Construction update from zMax Dragway @ Concord
Construction at zMax Dragway @ Concord, which will host the inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals Sept. 11-14, is progressing at a record pace. Much of the initial work on the grandstand and tower is already complete, and the whole facility is taking shape, as these aerial photographs attest. The event will be the first of six races in the NHRA Countdown to 1.
NHRA technical bulletin: helmets, shields, and blinders
NHRA Tech has posted changes to the 2008 Rules Revisions concerning General Regulations governing helmets and shields and windshield/windows. Basically, drivers in all classes may use tape on helmet shields, with certain provisions. There are NO CHANGES to restrictions as previously posted on the use of other blinders.
Harker twins considered for Project Podium scholarship grant
NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster drivers Kate and Diana Harker are among the young women drivers across multiple arenas of motorsport under consideration for the Lyn St. James Project Podium scholarship grant. The 25-year-old identical twins applied for the scholarship program, which aims to help young women drivers achieve their goals. The recipients will be announced in late May.

Fuller and Cat team overcoming early-season woes
Don’t hit the panic button just yet. “Hot Rod” Fuller and his Rob Flynn-led Caterpillar Top Fuel team are riding high following the Las Vegas racer’s seventh Top Fuel victory and 20th national event crown. Spirits are high in the Caterpillar camp after a triumphant weekend in Madison, where Fuller edged rival and five-time world champion Tony Schumacher.
