Flames, fun and Cacklefest light up California Hot Rod Reunion

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - It was a hot night at Famoso Raceway...literally.

With the combination of nighttime qualifying under the stars and Cacklefest, thousands of fans enjoyed a spectacular flame-fest during the second day of action at the 12th annual NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Nighttime Top Fuel qualifying - a first for the California Reunion - and Cacklefest, now in its 4th year, proved to be the perfect ending for another stunning day at the track. "The crowd was really into the night racing and Cacklefest," said Steve Gibbs, one of the originators of the Reunion. "It brought back lots of memories, and that's what this is all about."

Gibbs, who worked for the NHRA for more than three decades as director of competition, and was one of the driving forces behind the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum (producers of the Reunion), knows what these memories mean to the folks attending. "I've seen grown men cry when the cars were push-started during Cacklefest," he said. "The Reunion is a special event because it touches people and connects with them on a personal level. That's what makes the Reunion more than just a racing and hot rod show."

Sentimentality certainly surrounded the Cacklefest when Tony Nancy started the program by firing up the Sizzler. Fans then stood and cheered while 32 legendary dragsters - the most ever - lined up. History unfolded as the Rattler, Frantic Four, Magic Car, Rat Trap, ChiZler, Kuhl & Olsen, Beebe & Mulligan and others were push-started, driven along the transport road, then lined-up on the strip as they cackled. The Kuhl & Olsen and Beebe & Mulligan dragsters also provided a kick during the day races as they lined up for a special burnout. The Winged Express delighted the crowd with a wacky-wild lane-changing nighttime run.

The nighttime qualifying was proceeded by the Honoree award ceremony. Terry Abejuela, Auto Club coordinator of motorsports and special events presented the awards to this year's Honorees: John Bradley, Gary Cochran, Bruce Geisler, Glen Stokey, the late Pete Millar and Grand Marshal Bob Muravez (along with his famous alter ego, Floyd J. Lippencotte Jr.)

Mooneyes was honored as the Justice Brothers Spotlight Award winner and Pat Bernardini and his late brother Tony were the winners of the inaugural Golden Age award.

The nighttime races looked cool but the competition proved as intense as the flames that shot out of the Top Fuelers. Muravez celebrated by taking his Western Hoist Special down the track in just 5.926 seconds at a speed of 249.51 miles per hour, the quickest and fastest run he's ever posted. Lippencotte was speechless, but the crowd cheered on.

Earlier in Nostalgia Top Fuel qualifying, Denver Schutz became the 16th and final member of the Nitronic Research Five-Second Club as he ran the quarter-mile in 5.858 seconds at 236.34 miles per hour. It's fitting that Schutz should get this honor, since he was the 17th driver to run in the five-second ranks when the cars were new, just missing out on the original Cragar Five-Second Club.

That time held as Schutz was the top qualifier in Top Fuel. Bill Dunlap was second at 5.895 seconds and 238.41 mph and Muravez was third with his blistering time.

Speaking of hot, the daytime weather was kinda, sorta mild -- for Bakersfield, that is -- which helped bring out a record crowd to Famoso. During the day, while crews tuned and worked on their racers, street rodders showed off their handiwork and the sold-out Pit Pass Barbeque served tri-tip to almost 5,000 fans. In the vendor area, hot rod shirts, sunglasses and racing movies competed for fan attention with hard parts for the cars and complete cars for sale. Hot rod heaven, Bakersfield style.

"I'm blown away by this," NHRA Founder Wally Parks told the crowd. "Each year the Reunion gets bigger and yet everyone still has a good time. It's an amazing event and I want to thank everyone for making it possible."
