Lambeck earns Comp eliminator crown at Southern Oregon Dragway
MEDFORD, Ore. - Southern Oregon Dragway's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Snap-On Valley Thunder presented by KOBI 5, concluded today after being delayed first by rain and then this morning by fog. In the end, more than 400 racecars in 10 categories made their way down the track. Today's action included Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Comp, and Kerker Motorcycle. Competitors in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car finished eliminations on Saturday.
In Comp Eliminator Doug Lambeck won his first Northwest division event of the year. The Northridge, Calif., racer scored runner-up points in June at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore. In Medford, he took the win over Vincent Deceglie of Alta Loma, Calif.
The Super Stock final featured a repeat of the final round in Woodburn last June. This time Mark Faul of Tacoma, Wash., took the win over Napa Idaho's Rob Youngblood. This was Faul's first Northwest division win of the year after two runner-up finishes.
Chad Loge of Pleasanton, Calif., won in Stock Eliminator while Super Comp driver Matt Hartzell of Atwater, Calif., took the crown. In Super Gas Chris Newman, Lancaster, Calif., earned the win and in Super Street Mark Yeager of Hollister, Calif., won. Ed Hauter of Lynwood, Wash., was the Top Comp winner and Buff Kobs of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, rode to the win in Kerker Motorcycle.
In the Top Alcohol classes, Steve Federlin, Oregon City, Ore., won in Dragster and Fife, Wash., racer Bucky Austin took the win in Funny Car.
This was the final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event on the Northwest division schedule. Racers can still compete and earn points at out-of-division races.

Federlin, Austin claim wins at Southern Oregon Dragway; other eliminations to come
MEDFORD, Ore. - Qualifying is complete at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Snap-on Valley Thunder event, presented by KOBI 5, at Southern Oregon Dragway. Although originally scheduled to run Friday and Saturday, rain delays forced an extra day of competition. Eliminations are wrapped up in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. Eliminations in all other classes continue Sunday at 9 a.m.
In Top Alcohol Dragster, the No. 4 qualifier, Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., took the win. This marks Federlin's second trip to the winner's circle this season and his fourth final-round appearance in division competition. He came into the weekend leading in the chase for the division TAD title. Federlin ran 5.481 seconds at 257.26 mph in the final round to beat Mitch Myer of Hermiston, Ore.
Defending division Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Bucky Austin increased his season points total with another victory. The Fife, Wash., racer has two prior wins this year and was the No. 1 qualifier at this event. Austin made a 5.710-second, 247.02 mph pass in the final to beat Dennis Taylor of Anaheim, Calif.
In other qualifying classes, Comp Eliminator driver John Mihovitz of Ontario, Calif., retained his No. 1 qualifying status as did Tommy Gaynor of Vancouver, Wash., in Stock Eliminator and Richmond, B.C., Top Comp driver Shawn Cowie. In Super Stock, Jared Jordan earned the No. 1 position and so did Mike Scott in Kerker Motorcycle.

Qualifying underway at Southern Oregon Dragway's Lucas Oil race
MEDFORD, Ore. - Early rounds of qualifying were cut short at Southern Oregon Dragway's Snap-On Valley Thunder presented by KOBI 5 and the Visitors and Convention Bureau. The event is a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car competitors were scheduled to complete qualifying Friday and go into eliminations on Saturday. Rain before the final qualifying session forced division officials to postpone the final qualifying runs until Saturday at noon.
After two rounds of qualifying, Hillary Will of Scotia, Calif., is in the No. 1 spot while Bucky Austin of Fife, Wash., is leading in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Will made her way to No. 1 with a 5.477-second pass at 259.89 mph. Austin's 5.807-second, 251.42 mph effort put him in the lead. Top qualifiers in other classes are John Mihovetz, Ontario, Calif., in Comp Eliminator; Steve Wann, Modesto, Calif., in Super Stock; and Tommy Gaynor, Vancouver, Wash., in Stock Eliminator. Other top qualifiers are Shawn Cowie, Richmond, B.C., in Top Comp; and Buff Kob, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in Kerker Motorcycle.
Racing continues Saturday at Southern Oregon Dragway. Gates open at 8 a.m. and qualifying and time trials continue at 10 a.m. Eliminations are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars will run first round of eliminations at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20. NHRA Northwest Division racers take on the strip in Medford
MEDFORD, Ore. - Southern Oregon Dragway will host Snap-On Valley Thunder presented by KOBI 5 and the Medford Visitors and Convention Bureau, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Oct. 8-9. It is the last opportunity for Northwest division racers to earn valuable points toward national and divisional titles in their home division. The weekend will feature more than 400 drivers in 10 classes including 250-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars.
In Top Alcohol Dragster action, Steve Federlin is leading in the point standings. The Oregon City, Ore., racer has been to four final rounds this season, scoring the win at Mission Raceway Park in Mission, B.C. Federlin is looking for his first title in the class after finishing third in the division in 2003. Hot on Federlin's trail is Mitch Myers of Hermiston, Ore. Myers has scored two wins this year, at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore., and at an out-of-division race in Sonoma, Calif. He is just 33 points behind Federlin. Defending division Top Alcohol Dragster champion Joey Severance is in third place in the points. After some early-season struggles, the Spanaway, Wash., driver was runner-up at the division's last event, at Intermountain Motorsports Park in Acton, Mont.
The race for the crown in Top Alcohol Funny Car has heated up this year. Perennial favorite Bucky Austin, who has six division titles to his credit including 2002 and 2003, is leading the point standings but John Weaver is only 22 points back. Austin, of Fife, Wash., won both of the Lucas Oil events held at Woodburn Dragstrip and made it to the semis three times. Weaver, who lives in Orting, Wash., also has two wins, taking the trophies at Mission Raceway Park and at Pacific Raceways in Kent., Wash.
Gates at Southern Oregon Dragway open at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday and qualifying begins Friday at 10 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars will run three qualifying sessions on Saturday, at 3, 6, and 9 p.m. Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday at 10 a.m. and eliminations start at 1 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars hit the track at 3 p.m. for first round of eliminations.
Tickets for Snap-On Valley Thunder presented by KOBI 5 and the Medford Visitors and Convention Bureau are $15 Friday and $20 Saturday. Children 7 to 13 are $5 each day and kids 6 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
Southern Oregon Dragway is located in the Jackson County Speed Park. From Medford, take I-5 north to Crater Lake Highway, exit 30 (Highway 62). Go east to Highway 140 and turn right to Kershaw Road. Turn left on Thunder Road into the track.

WHAT: Snap-On Valley Thunder presented by KOBI 5 and the Medford Visitors and Convention Bureau, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships. The event is the last of seven in Northwest Division competition. FRIDAY, Oct. 8 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 10 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 3, 6, and 9 p.m.
SATURDAY, Oct. 9 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Qualifying and time trials continue at 10 a.m. and eliminations begin at 1 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round of eliminations at 3 p.m.
TICKETS: GENERAL ADMISSION/PIT PASS -- $15 Friday, $20 Saturday. Children 7 to 13 are $5 each day and kids 6 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. For more information please call Southern Oregon Dragway, (541) 826-3477.
PURSE: The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will vie for cash and contingency awards of $148,310, part of the 46-race, $6.5 million series.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2004 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $109,000 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 46 Lucas Oil events: $1,000 each in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car; $200 each in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock. (TAD and TAFC compete at 43 of 46 divisional events.)
JEG'S ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund from Jeg's High Performance. The 2005 Jeg's Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2005 Jeg's Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.
The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event.
Event sponsor, Jeg's High Performance, offers a "double up" bonus to Allstars competitors. Winners in each individual class who go on to win the national event will have their Allstars prize money doubled.
NHRA KERKER MOTORCYCLE SERIES: Run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, the NHRA Kerker Motorcycle Series is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,800 champions' purse posted by Kerker will be paid to first, second and third place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
The top four riders from each division in the NHRA Kerker Motorcycle Series will be invited to compete in the NHRA Kerker King of the Coast competition. In 2004, the All-Star invitational will be run in November during the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas. The rider who is crowned the Kerker King of the Coast will earn $2,000. The runner-up in the 16-bike field will receive $1,000.
Currently, Sportsman Motorcycles are run in NHRA's South Central, West Central, Northwest and Pacific divisions.
FEATURES: More than 400 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, featuring five-second, 260 mph side-by-side racing.
