Champions crowned at Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. - In the final results from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held this weekend at Orlando Speed World Dragway, Florida natives Dan Morrow, David Scott and Tony Fuller were among the winner's crowned.

In the Comp Eliminator final, low qualifier Charlie Westcott Jr., of Parma Mich., defeated Larry Pritchett of Clarkrange, Tenn. This was the second final round appearance in a row for Pritchett, who was a winner a few weeks ago at the Southeast Division opener at Gainesville Raceway.

Claiming the victory in Super Stock was Montgomery, Ala., racer Mike Crutchfield. In the final Crutchfield took out multi-time divisional champion Grant Lewis of Jesup, Ga.

Returning to the Stock winner's circle for the second year in a row was Pittsgrove, N.J., racer Lee Zane. In his final round contest Zane defeated Palmetto, Fla., resident Rod Johnson.

Taking home the win in Super Comp was Dan Morrow of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. Morrow won over Palmetto, Ga., racer David Tatum.

In Super Gas, David Scott of North Port, Fla., eliminated reining NHRA Northeast Division Champion Tom Stalba Jr., of Williamstown, N.J., in the class final.

For the second race in a row, Super Street was won by Tony Fuller of Oviedo, Fla., behind the wheel of his '69 Firebird. Fuller's final round opponent was Quentin Holloway of Greensboro, N.C.

In the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series, Gilmer Hinshaw of Burlington, N.C., claimed the win over Warner Bridges, Ga., racer Jeffery Barker.

The next stop for racers on the NHRA Southeast Division tour is Montgomery Motorsports Park in Montgomery, Ala., April 2-4, 2004. Additional information about the event can be obtained by logging on to www.MMPDragRacing.com or www.NHRA.com.

Fields set at Orlando Speed World

ORLANDO, Fla. - In the finals rounds of qualifying at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held this weekend at Orlando Speed World Dragway, Charlie Westcott Jr., Dave Layer and Bruce Noland are the top qualifiers in their respective fields.

In Comp Eliminator, Westcott of Parma, Mich., moved into the top qualifying position in the class. He leads the Comp Eliminator field with a time of 9.164 seconds. In the No. 2 spot, is the '23 Roadster of defending NHRA Southeast Division Champion Glen Treadwell of Sorrento, Fla. Treadwell is trailed by Tom Schmidt of Lindstrom, Minn. As the top qualifier Westcott earns $200 from Sealed Power as part of their Low Qualifier Bonus.

In Super Stock competition, Layer of Dayton, Ohio maintained his No. 1 qualifying position established Friday during qualifying. Fellow Ohio racer, Gary Russell of Sparta is second, while Vito Savino of Brewster, N.Y., is third. For qualifying in the top spot Layer earns $200 from Sealed Power.

In Stock Eliminator, Noland of Leesburg, Va., qualified in the top spot in the class with a pass of 11.254 seconds. Behind Noland is Jeff Warren of Clinton, S.C. Dave Edwards of Washington Court House, Ohio. rounds out the top three. Noland earned $100 from Sealed Power for qualifying in the No. 1 position in the class.

In the final qualifying in the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series, Ronnie Davis remained on top with a time of 6.890 seconds at 203.02 mph. Gilmer Hinshaw of Burlington, N.C., and Dave Saul of Winter Park, Fla., are qualified second and third.

Sunday's racing action will feature eliminations in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series.

Gates at Orlando Speed World Dragway will open Sunday at 8 a.m. with eliminations set to begin at 9 a.m. Tickets for tomorrow's event are $25 for adults. Children 12 and under are free with a paid adult. All tickets include a pit pass.

Racing underway at Orlando Speed World Dragway

ORLANDO, Fla. - The 2004 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series continues this weekend at Orlando Speed World Dragway for the second of seven events in NHRA's Southeast Division.

After the opening rounds of qualifying earlier today, former division champ Mike Saye of Johnston, S.C., leads the Competition Eliminator field with his '92 Cutlass. In the No. 2 spot is Roan Mountain, Tenn., driver Tim Freeman. Parma, Michigan racer Charlie Westcott is in third.

Filling the two of the top three spots in Super Stock are Ohio racers Dave Layer of Dayton in the top spot and Gary Russell of East Sparta in third. Brewster, N.Y., runner Vito Savino is currently in the No. 2 spot.

Claiming the No. 1 qualifying position in Stock Eliminator is Northeast Division racer Jim Boudreau of Tewksbury, Mass. Boudreau leads the field over Leesburg, Va., racer Bruce Noland and Jeff Warren of Clinton, S.C., who are qualified second and third in the Stock field.

After one round of qualifying in TracStar Satellite Systems Top Sportsman, Ronnie Davis of Commerce, Ga., leads the field. His 6.890-second time secured him in the top spot over Gilmer Hinshaw of Burlington, N.C. and Dave Saul of Winter Park, Fla.

Saturday's racing action will feature the continuation of qualifying in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and TracStar Systems Top Sportsman.

Orlando Speed World hosts NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series

ORLANDO, Fla. - NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series racers will converge on Orlando Speed World Dragway March 12-14. It is the second of seven events in the division where drivers in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street will compete for points leading to national and divisional championships.

The division's TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series will be run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Top Sportsman competitors will run qualifying and eliminations along with the other classes throughout the weekend.

There are two NHRA national champions who claim the Southeast Division as their home; Peter Biondo of Mt. Laurel, N.J., in Super Stock, and Bryan Robinson of Iuka, Miss. Both drivers also claimed the division titles en route to their national crowns. Biondo earned his ninth divisional title and third national crown. Robinson is a first-timer on both counts.

Biondo, a veteran driver in several NHRA classes, drove his Super Stocker to a total of six final rounds in divisional and national events in 2003, scoring wins in five of them. On the divisional level, Biondo won the season-opener in Gainesville, Fla., as well as here in Orlando, and in Reynolds, Ga., and Bristol, Tenn. He also won an out-of-division race in Las Vegas. He made it to the semifinals in Montgomery, Ala., and in Numidia, Pa.

Robinson won two divisional events and a national event. He was in the winner's circle in Reynolds, Ga., and Bristol, Tenn., also scoring a win at the national event in Gainesville. Robinson made it to the semifinals at two out-of-division races in Memphis, Tenn., and Bowling Green, Ky.

Comp Eliminator driver David Rampy reached a milestone in 2003, scoring his 50th NHRA national event win. The Piedmont, Ala., racer finished the season in fourth place in the national point standings and in second place on the division level. Rampy scored seven national event wins, giving him a total of 53 for his career. That number places him third on the all-time list of sportsman racers behind Pat Austin (75 wins) and Frank Manzo (55 wins).

Gates at Orlando Speed World Dragway open at 9 a.m. Friday, and at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Qualifying begins Friday at 10 a.m. with Comp Eliminator scheduled to run at 4:30 p.m. and Top Sportsman scheduled at 5 p.m. Qualifying continues Saturday at 9 a.m. Comp Eliminator will qualify at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. and Top Sportsman will run at 4 and 7 p.m. Eliminations begin Sunday at 9 a.m. Comp Eliminator will run first round of eliminations at 11 a.m. and Top Sportsman will run first round at noon.

Tickets, including pit pass, are $20 Friday, $25 Saturday and $25 Sunday. A three-day pass is $50. Children under 12 are admitted free with a paid adult.

SUNDAY, Mar. 14 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Comp Eliminator will begin eliminations at 11 a.m. and eliminations for Top Sportsman begin at noon.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND --
A $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2004 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- A $109,000 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at the 46 Lucas Oil events: $1,000 each in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car; $200 each in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock. (TAD and TAFC compete at 43 of 46 divisional events.)

JEG'S ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA'S seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund from Jeg's High Performance. The 2004 Jeg's Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA'S Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2004 Jeg's Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event.

This year, event sponsor, Jeg's High Performance, has offered a "double up" bonus to Allstars competitors. Winners in each individual class who go on to win the national event will have their Allstars prize money doubled.

TRACSTAR SYSTEMS SATELLITES TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships and a share in the $3,500 purse. Top Sportsman racers may run the seven Southeast Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in either the North Central or South Central Divisions.
