Final Eliminations:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Champions crowned at Cecil County

RISING SUN, Md. - After three days of drag racing action, competition at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast Shootout presented by Coca Cola, wrapped up today at Cecil County Dragway with winners being crowned in six categories.

The six winners crowned today in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street, join last night's winners, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Mike Kosky and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Frank Manzo, as Cecil County Dragway champs.

In Comp Eliminator, Sal Biondo of Maspeth, N.Y., was the victor in his category when he eliminated Phoenixville, Pa., driver Mark Hopkins in the class final. This was the first Northeast Division win of 2004 for Biondo, who last year collected two Comp Eliminator wins within the division.

Capturing the win in Super Stock was East Hanover, N.J., racer Dave Ficacci. His win was over Old Bridge, N.J., racer Russ Linke.

Taking the win in Stock Eliminator over North East, Md., racer Gary Simpers Jr., was the current national points leader in the class, Lee Zane of Pittsgrove, N.J. Today's win will boost Zane, who coming into this weekend's event was leading fellow Northeast Division racer Shane Carr of Williamstown, N.J., by a mere 14 points, even further ahead in the championship chase. Carr, who is currently No. 2 in national points, was hoping to gain some ground on Zane this weekend, but was eliminated in the quarterfinal round.

Earning the win in Super Comp was Lititz, Pa., driver Doug Doll Jr. His win was over Richmond, R.I., runner Donald Milson.

Making his second final-round appearance of the weekend was Jeff Szilagyi of Hellertown, Pa. Szilagyi, who was runner up to Regis Lepage in the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park run-off, which was completed this weekend at Cecil County Dragway, held on for this win this time, defeating Avis, Pa., racer John Stover in the final.

In Super Street, former division champ Michael Sawyer of Acton, Mass., earned the win when he defeated Raymond Balian of Massapequa, N.Y., in the final. Today's win was a bit of revenge for Sawyer, who last month at Numidia Raceway was defeated in the class final by Balian.

The next stop of the NHRA Northeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series tour is Atco Raceway in Atco, N.J., October 8-10. For more information please contact Atco Raceway at (856) 768-2167 or on the web at www.AtcoRace.com. Additional information can also be obtained by logging on to www.NHRA.com

Saturday Qualifying:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kosky and Manzo victors at Cecil County Dragway

RISING SUN, Md. - NHRA Northeast Division competitors in eight categories took to the track today for the second day of racing at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast Shootout presented by Coca Cola begin run this weekend at Cecil County Dragway.

In six of the eight categories being contested at the event, the first round of competition was completed this evening after the conclusion of qualifying and time runs. In the remaining two categories, Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, eliminations were completed tonight with Northeast Division veterans, Mike Kosky and Frank Manzo sharing the winner's circle this evening after wins in their respective categories.

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Kosky of Cuddy, Pa., defeated No. 1 qualifier Michael Gunderson of Middleburg, Fla., to take his first final round victory this year. In the final, Kosky ran 5.601 seconds at 248.34 mph to take out Gunderson, who ran an off pace 5.723 second pass at 246.35 mph. This is the second final round in a row for Kosky, who in a few weeks will compete against class newcomer Ashley Force, daughter of 12-time POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car champ John Force, in the final round run-off postponed from Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Manzo, earned his final round victory over Sterling, Va., racer Bunny Burkett in her first Northeast Division appearance of the year. Despite being dominated by Manzo in the class final, Burkett's outing at Cecil County Dragway was nothing short of amazing. After getting past Mickey Ferro in round one, Burkett defeated former National Champion Bob Newberry in the semifinal round, derailing the Schenectady, N.Y., racer's plan for back to back division wins.

En route to his final round meeting with Burkett, Manzo eliminated Berlin, N.J., racer Dan Pomponio in round one and Whiteford, Md., runner Darrel Cox Sr., in the semifinal. In the final against Burkett, Manzo ran 5.843 seconds at 251.02 mph to her 6.019 seconds pass at 237.88 mph, to take the win.

For Manzo, a win today was a must. The defending National Champion from Morganville, N.J., has been anything but himself this year. Though his win today at Cecil County Dragway marks an impressive fifth consecutive Northeast Division final round appearance for Manzo, with a handful of disappointing appearances on the national level, that has only helped put the champ is a disappointing twelfth in the national championship points chase. On the divisional level, Manzo is currently the NHRA Northeast Division points leader.

In other racing action, competitors in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator completed their final rounds of qualifying earlier in the day. The No. 1 spot in each category was earned by Al Ackerman of Saddle Brook, N.J., in Comp Eliminator, Joseph Franco III of North Babylon, N.Y., in Super Stock and Cecil Frazier of Canton, Mass., in Stock Eliminator.

Sunday's racing action will feature the continuation of eliminations in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.

Gates at Cecil County Dragway open Sunday at 8 a.m. Final eliminations are set to continue at 9:30 a.m. General Admission tickets, including a pit pass, are $18 and include a pit pass. Children 11 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. For more information please contact Cecil County Dragway at (410) 287-6280 or online at www.CecilCountyDragway.com.

Event preview:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lucas Oil Northeast Shootout comes to Cecil County

RISING SUN, Md. - Cecil County Dragway will host the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast Shootout presented by Coca-Cola, Aug. 27-29. The event is the sixth of seven in NHRA Northeast Division competition. Drivers in eight categories, including 260 mph Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC), will run for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships. A Pro Mod exhibition will also run in conjunction with the event.

In all, eight NHRA Lucas Series categories will be in competition. Among them is the Top Alcohol Funny Car class.

Frank Manzo, the most decorated Alcohol Funny Car driver in NHRA history, won the Northeast Division's season opener in Reading, Pa., and the second race in West Lebanon, N.Y. Manzo is going for his 15th Northeast Division Lucas Oil Series Championship and his 10th Lucas Oil national title. In 2003, the Morganville, N.J., racer earned his seventh consecutive national championship and his ninth straight divisional crown.

But Bob Newberry slowed down Manzo's current quest by winning the title last month at Numidia Raceway in Pennsylvania. Manzo still leads the Northeast Division points but is an uncharacteristic twelth nationally after lackluster showings at national events thus far in 2004.

Manzo dominated the Northeast last year by winning five out of the seven events and four NHRA national events. Newberry finished runner-up at four Northeast Division events in 2003 and again at West Lebanon this year before he finally beat Manzo in Numidia. The Schenectady, N.Y., resident, has found some consistency and is racing well this season. He would certainly welcome another victory at Cecil County, one of the tracks at which Manzo won in 2003.

At this race a year ago, Manzo beat Todd Veney in the Top Alcohol Funny final. So the stage is set for the superpowers of Alcohol Funny Car racing to clash in what should be a real quarter-mile shootout.

Meanwhile, Rich McPhillips, of Phoenixville, Pa., won last year's Cecil County Top Alcohol Dragster title with a final-round win over Richard Bourke. Overall, seven different drivers won Northeast Division TAD titles in 2003. And so far this season another three drivers, Steve Cantrell, of Wilmington, Del., Canadian racer Daniel Mercier out of Timothee, Que., and Art Gallant, of Boxboro, Mass., have won the Alcohol Dragster titles at the first three events. Any driver who comes through the gate, seems to have a chance to win in the Northeast. Gallant, the 2002 National and NHRA Northeast Division Lucas Oil Series Champion was runner-up at two other events, putting him in the lead in 2004 Northeast Division points.

Gates at Cecil Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start at 10 a.m. Friday with TAD and TAFC scheduled at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Pro Mod will qualify after each TAD and TAFC session. There also will be a special Super Stock and Stock Best Package and Wheelstand event Friday evening.
