Sunday Eliminations:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Results favor South Central Division in Top Alcohol, Comp

Scribner, Neb. - Racing at Nebraska Motorplex's O'Reilly Summer Sizzle NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event concluded with South Central Division racers taking wins in Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, and Comp.

"We've only run four races this year, so we're just trying to earn some late season points," said Top Alcohol Dragster racer Lee Callaway.

The odds were against the Channelview, Texas, resident as he faced off against Alan Bradshaw in the Top Alcohol Dragster final. Bradshaw has only raced in two divisional and two national events this year, but the dragster pilot is no stranger to the pressure of being in the finals. The Odessa, Texas, resident made it to the finals in all four events, earning wins at both divisional events he attended.

Callaway has raced at five total events, but had never made a final this season. Despite his inexperience in the finals, Callaway earned the win lights after running a 5.878 second, 241.74 mph pass.

"Tom Conway did a great job in tuning the car," said Callaway. "It's my first time at this track, but he's been here before with other drivers and knows the conditions."

Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Jackie Stidham also came to Scribner with the intentions of making up for races he had missed earlier in the season. The five-time South Central Division Champion came to this race, in hopes that he would be able to gain ground on Tate Branch, who is currently leading the points in his division.

Stidham was able to maximize his outing by earning the win on a 6.149 second, 232.85 mph run, despite the absence of his brother and crew chief Ronnie Stidham.

"I've never been to a race without him," said Jackie. "I was a little nervous before my first pass, but once the car starts, you forget everything and just concentrate on driving."

Winners in other categories are Buddy Nickens of Spring, Texas, in Comp; Ben Harper of Olathe, Kan., in Super Stock; Scott Dugdale of Circle Pines, Minn., in Stock; John Goemann of Dodge City, Kan., in Super Comp; Paul Pittman of Bloomington, Minn., in Super Gas; and BJ Boles of Lake Park, Ill., in Super Street.

In NHRA Kerker Motorcycle Series competition, local racer Tom Gilligan of Fremont, Neb., took the win on a 9.979 second, 127.19 mph run.

West Central Division competition of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series makes its final stop of the season in Earlville, Iowa, Sept. 6-8 at Tri-State Raceway. For more information, call the track at (563) 923-3724.

Saturday Qualifying:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Night of Flames" light up Scribner sky

Scribner, Neb. - Saturday night's racing action at the O'Reilly Summer Sizzle featured the "Night of Flames", during Nebraska Motorplex's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race.

Many of the Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars took advantage of the cooler temperatures and ran their best times of the day during their third qualifying session.

"I just came here to race," said dragster pilot James Copeland II. "You race the track. Hopefully, I'll be able to put up some big numbers this weekend."

Heading into tomorrow's eliminations, Alan Bradshaw in Top Alcohol Dragster and Kirk Williams in Top Alcohol Funny Car earned top qualifier honors.

Bradshaw of Odessa, Texas, made a 5.733-second, 248.41 mph pass on his third run to take the top spot away from Lee Callaway, who held the top spot all day until Bradshaw's final pass. The dragster pilot has competed in two national and two divisional events this year, making the finals in all four events. He took wins in both divisional events, becoming one of only two racers this year to have two wins in West Central Division competition.

Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Williams, also became the top qualifier on his final pass after a run of 6.058 seconds, 239.17 mph. Before his final qualifying pass, the Glenwood, Iowa, resident indicated that he would be pushing the limits on his car in an attempt to better his position in the standings. Williams was qualified eighth before his final pass.

"We're going to push it," said Williams. "I'm either going to be the guy on top or the guy in last."

Top qualifiers in other categories are Roger Brogdon of Tomball, Texas, in Comp; Bobby Dennis of Shorter, Ala., in Super Stock; and Robert Shaw of Sedalia, Mo., in Stock.

In NHRA Kerker Motorcycle Series action, Tom Gilligan of Fremont, Neb., remained the top qualifier after recording a .500 second reaction time on Friday.

"I guess there is a little bit of an advantage, racing at your home track," said Gilligan. "You can look back at your records to see what you should run. It'll help a little with the reaction time, too."

Tickets for Sunday's eliminations are $20, with children 12 and under admitted free with a paid adult. Gates open at 7 a.m., and eliminations begin at 8 a.m. Round one of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car is scheduled for noon.
