Dallas started out great, spending time with Damon Gregg, who owns multiple franchises. We went to Sam’s Auto Repair shop in Ft. Worth where we met a lot of customers and gave away some great prizes. One of the cool things about the area was we got there early enough to go to Kennedale Dragway, which is right across from the speedway, formerly called Cowtown. I used to run my midget cars there with Danny Stratton and J.J. Yeley. I met the owner and it was nice to be where there’s so much history. I remember back in the day when former Texas greats like Gene Snow, Paul Candies and the Blue Max used to run there. I know why they called it Cowtown because there were cows everywhere. LOL
Once we got to the track, we had a packed house in our hospitality, over 200 guests each day. I want to thank Snap-on manager Rusty Patillo for taking care of us and supporting our team! When it came to the race, we lost the first two qualifying runs on Friday to rain so we were down to two shots on Saturday to get in the race. We ended up qualifying second and going on to beat Force in the final. We ran a 4.10 at 312 mph, which was the second fastest speed for funny cars for the entire weekend. We were also sporting our Snap-on Franchise scheme, which took us to a win in Denver. It was just a solid race all around with ETs of 4.09, 4.10, 4.09, 4.13, and 4.10. It was an all-star performance and huge win for our team. It moved us from eighth to second in points and put us in a good position to head to St. Louis.
This is when it really counts as these championship points don’t come very easy. Dallas marked our fourth win of the season and fifth final round so we’re really pumped. We’re also excited that we’ve won races throughout the year in all different conditions so we feel confident we can overcome anything.
I can’t thank the team enough, Johnny West, Chris “Warrior” Kullberg, Narciso “Nacho” Bravo, Archie Singleton, Sterling VanDusen, Ethan Dooling, Ryan Carrillo, Andrew Moore, John Silva and Mike Rodriguez. These guys really give their all and it shows. Without their support and dedication, I wouldn’t be where I am this year!
In St. Louis, I spent the day with Snap-on manager Rick Farrow and franchisee Brian Haar at Tom’s Auto Repair in Granite City. We had a great turnout and I got to meet a lot of true drag race fans. Snap-on had a hospitality tent with over 500 people on Saturday, so I spent some time there signing autographs and meeting customers. It’s great that they continue to have such a huge crowd year after year.
The race weekend in St. Louis wasn’t what we expected. We made a couple good runs on Friday but struggled on Saturday. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the car’s potential as the throttle cable broke in round one against Wilkerson, ending our weekend. We brushed it off and spent a couple days in the shop working on the car in preparation for Reading.
Before I headed to the track in Reading, I spent time with Snap-on franchisee, Dave O’Neill and his customers at Milham Toyota dealership and had a great time. He even sent me home with a box of Snap-on socks (the best socks ever). LOL
We had a great turnout for hospitality but the race itself was interesting from a lot of perspectives. We started out strong on Friday, finishing 3rd after Q-1. For Q-2, we were on track to run about a 4.02-03 but the blower belt came off just past halftrack. The car still ran a 4.09 so we’re confident we would’ve finished in the top thereafter Friday. On Saturday, we were trying to move up the ladder and spun the tires both runs, putting us 8th going into race day. Sunday first round, it seemed like the track had deteriorated because a lot of the fast cars were getting loose. We did manage to get by Tasca but lost second round to eventual race winner, Force. The team is now back in the shop and taking some time to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb and take a few days to relax. We’re 5th in points and still mathematically alive for the championship so we’ll be ready for the competition in Vegas! We won that race in the spring so there’s no reason this Snap-on Toyota can’t go out for a repeat!
Hey everyone! Sorry it’s been a while but I’ll get you up to speed on what’s been happening here at Cruz Pedregon Racing.
We’ve had a crazy second half of the season, starting with a win in Denver, which was our third of the season! Our next fun event was a match race in Cordova, Ill., at the 60th World Series of Drag Racing. It was an awesome event with a packed house both nights. We ran our Snap-on Toyota against Tony three times. We lost all three rounds to him but the good news is, I had my old school funny car there and won the race. There were 17 cars fighting for eight spots and a lot of great competition I might add. We only made one run and qualified with a 5.96 at 240 MPH. While I was at it, I raced a car called Down Under Thunder, which is owned by my good friend and Snap-on associate, Bazz Young. He ran a 5.99 which was his first pass in the 5.0s so congrats to him for that! Unfortunately, we had to beat on him a little in E-2. LOL. We ran a 5.84 in the first round, which was my quickest run to date in this car, a 6.29 in the second round (beating Bazz) and a 5.90 in the final to take the win against the Chi-town Hustler. We were hurting pistons every run but it was still a great event to win!
Next, we had a busy week before our hometown race in Indy. I spent most of Wednesday downtown at the Traxxas fan fest then on to do an interview with Telemundo Indy which was cool! On Thursday, I started my day with Snap-on Tools franchisee Dave Reese at a Grill n’ Chill. We went to a really neat shop on the west side of town and they had a bunch of show cars on hand. Dave even gave away a Snap-on grill to one of his great customers! Later that night, we had an open house at our race shop for the race fans and got to start up my dad’s car, which was nice. Thanks to all the fans that showed up to support us!
After all that, we still had a race to attend. LOL! We were one of the teams that earned the opportunity to race in the Traxxas Shootout, and lost in the final round to Beckman by 17 inches! It was still a great race for us and a turning point with the car. We got the clutch figured out and I want to thank Johnny West for coming out and helping us. Johnny will be with us for the rest of the year and working closely with Warrior and all our guys to help build a stronger team.
Our race day was short but the Snap-on Tools Toyota car was on a fast pass first round that unfortunately didn’t stick so we lost to Robert Hight. I still looked at the weekend as a successful one. We’re solidly in the Countdown to the Championship and now it’s just a matter of scoring the most points over these next six races. There’s no doubt that it’s gonna be a dog fight but it’ll make it fun for the fans! We’ve had a week to get some rest, so now we’re fired up and ready to take on Charlotte!
Hey everyone, sorry I’ve missed a few races but we’ve been really focused on getting this Snap-on Toyota dialed in. So, here’s what’s been going on the last few weeks at Cruz Pedregon Racing.
Before we headed to the race in Atlanta, I made a stop to visit my good friends Jeff and Amy Garmon. They own Garmon’s Diesel, right outside of Atlanta and are an associate sponsor for our team. They have a diesel performance transmission shop and we toured their facility. They also held a Snap-on diagnostics seminar at their shop with their franchisee (Ben Arnold) and some of his customers. It was pretty cool because they had some 5.7 Cummins diesel trucks that Jeff’s souped up and some Dodge diesels that run crazy times in the ¼ mile. It was cool to be a part of that since I grew up around diesel trucks.
After that, we headed to the Coke Champions dinner which is always fun. We had a great meal and a chance to spend some time with the folks from Coke and the Mello Yello brand that are supporting our sport. It’s pretty awesome that they invite the past champions to this event every year and we truly appreciate everything they do for us!
The next stop was at Sparky Machines Auto Museum with Snap-on franchisee Ron Smith. It was at a really cool car museum with lots of neat cars and trucks with a great shop out in the country. They had a great turn out too which always makes for a fun time.
The race weekend was crazy, getting rained out and having to make a second trip back. We ended up getting two qualifying runs on Friday and ended up 3rd and went to the semi-finals where we dropped some cylinders due to a head gasket issue but still managed to come out on top of the points.
Next, we moved on to Topeka, one of my favorite tracks with a great history of winning back in the 90’s with the McDonald’s car. I started out my weekend with Snap-on franchisee David Foster at the Clint Bowyer Autoplex in Emporia. There were a lot of cross-over fans from NASCAR and I got to sign 4 or 5 tool boxes and even a dusty old diecast. Lol! The race that weekend was interesting from the perspective that we were very consistent and qualified 8th but didn’t get the end results we were looking for. In the first round, we found out we had a broken piston so running a 4.18 with that issue was pretty amazing, but wasn’t good enough to get past Beckman. Overall, we learned a lot. The guys got a little bit of rest and did a lot of work during the off week to get ready to go out and battle at Englishtown!
During Memorial Day weekend, I was invited out to the Coke 600 by my good friend Jeff Howe from Snap-on. Every year, Snap-on runs a national sales program where a franchisee, customer, and guests get an all-expenses paid weekend out at the Coke 600 event. We started off by touring the Penske shop and having dinner on Friday night. On Saturday, they took everyone to the NASCAR museum and then we attended the Nationwide race. Snap-on did everything first class and even raffled off a SS Camaro! Thanks again to everyone for that great experience!
Next, we got to spend time near Englishtown with franchisee Richard Frye at Tom’s Ford dealership in Keyport, NJ. They had some great pizza and subs along with some great Snap-on customers. E-town was one of our better races but unfortunately we don’t have the results to show it. We had the quickest ET on both middle of the day runs. In Q-3 we ran a 4.10 and the belt broke at about 150 feet before the finish line so it was probably on a 4.08. It was a tremendous run because the track was about 120 degrees. In E-1, we continued the stellar runs with a 4.08 against Capps’ 4.12 but in the second round, the clutch was grabbing real hard on the engine during the burn out and backing up so we wound up spinning the tires early and it never really recovered. It was disappointing for sure but definitely a race where we felt like we had the car to beat. We looked at the clutch situation and discovered that the springs weren’t right so we’re working in the shop now to get it fixed for Bristol. There’s no reason we can’t go there and pick up where we left off.
The team is enthusiastic and the crew chief and driver are on the same page. This Snap-on car is a great car and we’re so excited for all our sponsors! We’ll go out to Bristol where I’d love to win! It’s probably the most scenic facility on the circuit. They have the short track next door and the drag race track is carved out of a mountain so the thunder of the cars is amazing. I think we have something for ‘em next weekend so tune in!
